      Job summary

The postholder will be joining the Urology Department which provides a wide range of urological services. The Unit has a high workload in Uro-oncology and works in close partnership with our cancer network partners at Morriston Hospital, Swansea and University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff for pelvic oncology and robotic surgery.

The Department has an excellent regional reputation in Specialty Urological training and teaching. It is a popular rotation amongst trainees due to the clinical exposure provided, and actively encourages audit and research. All Consultants are involved in General/Core Urology, working in a multi-disciplinary fashion with our Specialist Nurses.

The post holder will work as part of the Hywel Dda University Health Board Urology Network with professional support and mentorship provided by the consultant urologists within the Health Board, and also the more senior consultant surgeons and physicians based at Glangwili General Hospital. This will be provided through both regular onsite support by the senior consultant urologists and support through teleconferencing. The weekly session based at Glangwili General Hospital will also provide an opportunity for professional support by consultant urologists.

      Main duties of the job

      The successful candidate will:

Have experience and knowledge of running and further developing the Urology service.

Commit to delivering and developing a comprehensive Urology service in conjunction with existing colleagues to ensure provision of the service as per direction of the Health Board.

Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of the Division's and Health Board's agreed objectives.

Work with specialist nurses and physician colleagues within the Urology service to provide clinical care for patients.

Participate in the emergency on-call rota.

Offer acute inpatient assessment and treatment and deliver outpatient clinics and procedures.

Acute Urology inpatient care is delivered from two sites Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen and Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth. Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest provides only outpatient and diagnostic procedures and Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli provides outpatient, diagnostic and scheduled inpatient care.

This post will be based at Glangwili Hospital but the post holder will be expected to work closely with colleagues across HDUHB and also with colleagues in the neighbouring Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB).

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
