      Dane County Planning & Development has a current opening for an LTE GIS Mapping Technician.


      NOTE: Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

      DEFINITION

      Under the direction of the Land Records Administrator in the Department of Planning and Development, perform development and maintenance of the Dane County digital tax parcel data layer; draft and compute operations involved in updating and maintaining the digital parcel data layer, using ESRI’s ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro applications and related software modules. The management of land information includes creating a spatial representation of property records in a geographic information system (GIS). Required mapping and GIS skills include the use of coordinate geometry to interpret traverse information and to describe property boundaries. Also maintained in the County’s GIS are historic tax parcels, subdivision boundaries, right-of-way corridors, and street centerlines. Information for this job is typically gathered from recorded or surveyed documents including deeds, certified survey maps, subdivision plats, condominiums, annexation records, and other types of surveys.

      EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

      Planning & Development : Update digital GIS maps by adding new parcels and subdivisions created by land divisions. Maintain the digital tax parcel database. Research and review legal recorded document with the Register of Deeds. Maintain other digital GIS data sets as needed.

      Education, Training and Experience:

      One (1) year of coursework, training or experience in Geographic Information Systems, geography, computer science, cartography/GIS, surveying, civil engineering, planning, real estate or related field. Additional consideration will be made for applicants with experience in document interpretation, mapping property descriptions, reading legal descriptions, data analysis and interpretation, as well as land division concepts and how they relate to the tax parcels.

      Special Requirements/Licenses :

      Must have a valid driver’s license, and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent.

      Physical and Environmental Workplace Requirements:

      This position is expected to work in the office. Frequent repetitive movement of hands and fingers for typing and/or writing. Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching with hands and arms. Must be able to carry, lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.


      Knowledge of digital data input methods including the use of coordinate geometry; knowledge of topological data structures and relational database management systems; familiarity with general principles of cartography and cadastral land records modernization; ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; ability to operate ESRI software as well as the Microsoft Office suite of products; ability to work independently without direct supervision; ability to perform assigned functions with a minimum of error; and ability to work effectively with others.
