What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Review documentation in electronic medical records and assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes
- Participate in the compliant physician query process and collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDIS) team
- Assist with quality metric questions and respond to external coding reviews from private payers and government contractors
- Interact with physicians and other clinicians regarding coding and documentation with minimal supervision
- Partner with Inpatient Coding Quality Analysts and the Inpatient Coding Supervisor for education and quality monitoring
What is Required (Qualifications):
- High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of Medical Coding Education; active coding certification in lieu of education required
- Required certifications: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Minimum of two years of progressive inpatient facility coding experience
- Knowledge of current Official Coding Guidelines, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, and ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems
- Proficiency with encoder software, Microsoft Office applications, and strong communication skills
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience in an Academic Medical Center and/or Level 1 Trauma Center
- Familiarity with complex medical and coding concepts encountered in an Academic Medical Center
- Knowledge of external auditing programs, such as Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) and Office of the Inspector General (OIG)
