- Masters Degree in Medical Illustration or equivalent study and experience is required.
- Must be proficient in using Adobe CC applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects for manipulating and creating images and animations.
- Excellent drawing skills.
- Basic knowledge of medical sciences including chemistry, biology, immunology, and genetics are required.
- Attention to detail, commitment to quality, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment are essential.
- Familiarity with fundamentals of biomedical statistics, information analysis, and presentation is desired.
- Excellent creative, analytical, production, communication, organizational and teamwork skills are essential.
- A working knowledge of additional programs, including 3D modeling, 3D animation, sound editing, video editing, video post production and animation programs is desirable.
- Knowledge of CSS, HTML 5, JavaScript or other tools for online interactivity is a plus.
- Interest and experience in information graphics, UI design, graphic design, and data visualization are all a plus.

We are currently seeking a Medical Illustrator to support our editorial team based in Boston (hybrid in-office and remote or 100% remote schedule).
The Medical Illustrator collaborates with the Graphic Arts Director, the Illustration Manager, and the other illustrators to advance the quality and effectiveness of all visual content in the NEJM. Applies the latest techniques and understanding of medicine to visually communicate new clinical and scientific information to physicians and scientists. Directly works with editors and authors to develop medical/scientific print and online interactive and multi-media illustrations for The New England Journal of Medicine. This will require reading articles, interpreting medical/scientific information and making recommendations for appropriate ways to represent information. Expected to research original concepts and reinterpret submitted images in order to best communicate information visually. Follows style guidelines for NEJM graphics, suggesting changes and exceptions to guidelines when appropriate. Works with Graphic Arts Director and other illustrators to refine and improve graphics style. Tracks and oversees production for assigned illustrations and animations. Communicates design, production, and scheduling concerns to supervisor and relevant staff. Helps maintain the in-house illustration archive. Ensures accuracy and consistency of assigned medical/scientific images. Advocates for technical and procedural innovation when appropriate.
Responsibilities:
1. Collaborates with graphic arts director and illustration manager to advance the quality and effectiveness of graphics for the NEJM. Works with editors and authors to develop medical/scientific illustrations, information graphics, and animations.
2. Interprets medical/scientific information visually. Researches and reinterprets original submitted illustrations to create clear, informative, and engaging illustrations and graphics that conform to the NEJM graphic and brand style guide.
3. Communicates and collaborates with editors, authors, supervisor, coordinators, and other departments regarding project status and any concerns related to timely completion of projects.
4. Reviews scripts and creates storyboards for animations.
5. Serves as an in-house resource on medical/scientific illustration and information graphics and also as a resource for graphic design and visual communication.
6. Jointly with the Graphic Arts Director, other illustrators, and Digital Asset Management archivist catalogs and maintains an up-to-date library of medical illustration and visual references.
7. Reviews image files to ensure they meet established technical standards developed jointly with Media Resources and NEJM Production. Requests files from authors that meet NEJM publishing specifications. If necessary, communicates with authors and others to clarify our technical requirements for image files.
8. Creates and transmits electronic roughs, final illustrations, and proofs for author and editor review and approval.
9. Ensures that all assigned illustrations are produced on schedule, accurately and to established sizes, digital formats and quality standards.
10. Assists in choosing and processing or creating graphics for the This Week in the Journal section of NEJM.
11. Processes or adapts medical illustration for NEJM website, mobile platforms, other platforms and NEJM products.
12. Additional responsibilities as assigned.
