Job Description

- Performs complex metadata creation, selection, evaluation, and editing for resource access, description, and record management in Ex Libris Alma and OCLC Connexion systems, while cataloging books, auction catalogs, and other monographic materials
- Prepares bibliographic metadata for contribution to BIBCO and name authority metadata for contribution to NACO, according to the standards of these cooperative cataloging programs
- Performs physical processing of materials (e.g., labeling, marking, stamping, and housing)
- Applies knowledge of MARC, RDA, and AACR2
- Uses various library software applications to execute complex transactions to manage library materials
- Provides library services to staff and other library users
- May help in unpacking, organizing, and distributing materials
- May provide training to staff and other colleagues, when required
- May review work of other staff
- Suggests and may revise procedures within assigned area in consultation or partnership with other staff
- Participates in section meetings and other meetings as appropriate
- Serves on Getty, GRI, and Library teams, taskforces, working groups, as needed
- Engages in continuing professional development by attending and participating in professional conferences and training opportunities related to position responsibilities
- For librarian positions: MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; undergraduate and additional graduate degree in an appropriate discipline preferred
- For other positions: undergraduate degree in appropriate discipline; additional graduate degree in an appropriate discipline preferred
- 0-2 years related professional experience
- May require related supervisory and/or project management experience
- Requires strong communication skills
- May require special subject, language, or technical expertise
- Knowledge of RDA/AACR2, MARC, LC cataloging standards, and LC classification
- Knowledge of or experience with non-MARC formats and non-RDA metadata standards
- Facility with OCLC Connexion and Alma or other integrated library systems preferred
- Reading knowledge of at least one non-English language preferred
- Ability to lift boxes and push trucks up to 40 pounds
- Experience with industry standard software suites as appropriate to assigned duties
- Experience handling fragile or brittle materials preferred
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to apply policies and procedures consistently
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work both under little to no supervision and in partnership with others
- Knowledge of cataloging issues and trends preferred, particularly linked open data, Open Access, and BIBFRAME

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) Research Library seeks a creative, forward-looking, collaborative, and service-oriented Cataloging Librarian. The Metadata Specialist I catalogs books and other monographic resources as a member of the Getty Library’s Published Materials Cataloging & Metadata team within the Getty Research Institute’s Collections and Discovery Division. This position creates and processes various bibliographic metadata under little to no supervision and in partnership to provide and enhance access to published resources relating to scholarly art history, humanities, and conservation in a variety of languages. The position creates and updates bibliographic, holdings, item, and authority records while performing a range of cataloging from simple copy cataloging to complex original cataloging.
