Job Description

- These programs help communities to deal with, recover and prepare for disaster through disaster recovery funding and the Disaster Ready Fund to help reduce the risk and impact of disasters
- NEMA connects with communities, industry and non-government organisations around Australia to share lessons and provide awareness on navigating government services
- NEMA listens to community and industry to inform strategic policy and planning and provides national leadership through policy development and strategy to improve risk reduction, resilience and recovery
- NEMA shares knowledge, situational awareness, and trends in disaster efforts to inform, guide and shape the national picture and decision-making with federal, state and local government
- NEMA provides 24-hour monitoring of all hazards and coordinates operations for domestic and international emergencies. NEMA also supports preparedness and response activities through the operationalisation of the Australian Government Crisis Management Framework.
- The design and delivery of recovery and resilience initiatives, programs or funding
- Advising on and developing national and strategic policy to reduce disaster risks or enhance recovery outcomes.
- Developing and implementing programs or policies
- Coordinating key lines of effort at all levels of government
- Monitoring and evaluating the efficacy of our work.
- Contributing to strategic policy, programs and projects and/or managing contracts to contribute to positive policy outcomes
- Developing effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, including but not limited to, charities, community groups, state and territory governments, councils and industry
- Providing secretariat support to committees and working groups, contribute to reporting and other governance processes
- Draft briefing and material to support executive, the Minister and contribute to Parliamentary and Cabinet processes
- Liaising across government and other stakeholders to align and integrate disaster risk reduction into relevant activities
- Working effectively under pressure and in a changing environment to deliver high quality advice and outcomes.
- An interest in policy and/or project management
- Some influencing and negotiation skills, and be able to develop effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
- An understanding or an ability to gain an understanding of relevant government policy, legislative and financial frameworks including Commonwealth procurement and grant rules and guidelines
- Basic oral and written communication skills to advise and influence stakeholders and decision makers
- The ability to show initiative, sound judgement, integrity and personal drive
- An interest in understanding of disaster and climate management, and the issues facing Australia
- Experience or an interest in program management, and/or disaster funding programs and policy at Commonwealth, state or local government level.

The DRR Group supports prevention and risk reduction, recovery and reconstruction for Australians impacted by disasters. Our work makes it possible for Australians to rebuild and recover from disaster, and become more resilient.
There are greater pressures on the Australian Government to meet the needs and expectations of Australians when we face complex and concurrent disaster impacts and the increasing risk of disaster.
