      The Department of Fish & Game works to preserve the state's natural resources and people's right to conservation of those resources, as protected by Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution.       The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries serves Massachusetts’ citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats, while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.


      The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Seasonal Fisheries Technician to support the DMF diadromous fisheries program field work in herring runs all over the state from early spring to late summer.


      DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Deploy various nets and traps in coastal streams during the annual spring monitoring for river herring, American eels, rainbow smelt, and American shad.
      2. Collect, record, and process biological information on diadromous species.
      3. Collect and process water quality data.
      4. Record and organize data including data entry for computer analysis.
      5. Assist other activities of the Diadromous Fish Management Project including, stocking, stream maintenance, and fishway management.
      6. Operate and maintain field equipment including sampling equipment and motor vehicles.
      7. Assist other MADMF projects with conducting research and field sampling.
      8. Perform related duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledges, skills, abilities):

      1. Ability to identify marine fish and invertebrates common in Massachusetts’ coastal waters.
      2. Experience working with the collection of biological fisheries data for diadromous fish.
      3. Knowledge of computer software applications including: Microsoft Office Suite.
      4. Experience filling data forms in the field and compiling data in tabular and graphical form.
      5. Ability to interact favorably with field crews during sampling.
      6. Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate field sampling trips.
      7. Ability to handle fish sampling nets and work in wet and/or cold environments.
      8. Experience collecting and preparing samples (i.e. scales, otoliths) for ageing.
      9. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds safely.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

      Two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical experience in marine biology or fisheries work, including training in marine, fisheries or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography.


      SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
      Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside.

      This is a four month position, with a start date of March 11, 2023.
