      A Brief Overview

      In the Nurse Extern program, students will become acquainted with the clinical setting, apply academic knowledge to practice, work with nurse preceptors to provide hands-on patient care, and participate in educational seminars. The externs are placed in various areas within CHOP and will rotate through more than one clinical area during the summer program. Our exciting opportunities for rotation are within medical/surgical, ambulatory, intensive care units, perioperative, behavioral health, and King of Prussia Hospital.

      The program is open to students enrolled in an RN nursing program and must be within 12 months of graduation by the start of the program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (inclusive of previous Spring and Summer semesters) is required.


      What you will do

      • Under RN supervision, assists in the provision of care to patients and families. Follows Nursing Process to deliver safe care: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
      • Responds promptly and positively to patients, families, associates, and all others in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner.
      • Follows hospital and departmental procedures and policies, including but not limited to patient safety, mandatory education, confidentiality, and attendance.
      • Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills and use monitoring equipment, under direct supervision of RN/Preceptor.
      • Demonstrates high standards of professionalism by maintaining a professional image in all he/she does.
      • Responsible for efficient and cost-effective utilization of hospital resources.
      • Identifies own learning needs and obtains necessary education to meet requirements of position.

      Education Qualifications

      • High School Diploma / GED Required
      • Technical Diploma Enrollment in a Nursing Program Required

      Experience Qualifications

      • In a healthcare setting Preferred

      Licenses and Certifications

      • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required
