      GENERAL SUMMARY:

      Under supervision of a Registered Nurse and following hospital policies and procedures, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients.

      UNIT SUMMARY:

      6N MPCU is a generalized medical progressive care unit with broad variety of disease processes ranging of the general medical population specializing in cardiac, respiratory, renal (CAPD) GI, sepsis, and other generalized disease processes that requires more frequent and closer observation by the nursing staff.

      All patients are monitored for cardiac arrhythmias’ continuous SpO2 saturations, BP, and respiratory. Nearly 25% of our patients require high-flow, Bipap, CPAP to help support their respiratory status. We are able to administer and monitor a multitude of vasopressors and other continuous drips requiring closer monitoring of VS. Staff able trained to administer and monitor vasoactive drips, insulin drips, and pressors. In addition, the nurses have received additional training do perform CPAD. All nurses must take and pass a critical care examination with a passing score of 84%. Staff must obtain their ACLS within 6 months of hire.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

      1. Performs routine bedside nursing activities including: bathing and personal grooming of patients; ambulating, moving and turning patients; assisting patients with bedpans or urinary devices; making patient beds and caring for personal property.
      2. Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches and sitz baths or pericare.
      3. Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
      4. Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
      5. Performs more complex nursing procedures and treatments after theoretical preparation and supervised clinical experience.
      6. Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as they occur.
      7. Performs assessments and documents accurate, complete and concise patient information on appropriate forms, including flow sheets, activity records, etc.
      8. Participates in nursing staff conferences, in-services and educational opportunities.
      9. Ensures the optimum utilization of personnel, supplies and equipment.
      10. Provides copy of current school transcript to supervisor at the end of each marking period to confirm continued eligibility.
      11. Assists in admitting, transferring and discharging patients.
      12. Assists in pre-operative and post-operative care.

      STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

      1. Education / Training:
      • Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing. May be enrolled in an (accredited) Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program.
        • Note: ADN graduates will be required to sign a BSN completion agreement upon hire/placement in a graduate nurse position.
      • RN from another state awaiting Michigan Licensure (or) Graduate Nurse from accredited school of nursing awaiting retake of NCLEX or awaiting results of the last exam.
      • Transcripts must be provided at the time of hire and may be requested for review periodically.

      1. Work Experience :

      • Requires evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations – theory and clinical.

      1. Certification, Licensure, Registration :

      • Requires current BLS certification.

      1. Other Qualifications :

      • Requires the interpersonal and communication skills to effectively deal with patients and their families to calm fears and to exchange detailed patient information with hospital professional staff.
      • Requires the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
      • Requires the ability to gather and assess patient information from a variety of sources in a timely manner and relay accurate information to professional staff.
      • Requires basic keyboard familiarity, ability to effectively utilize hospital information and electronic medical record software/system as required.

      WORKING CONDITIONS:

      A. Physical Effort:

      • Walking, standing, heavy lifting and bending for most of shift.

      B. Work Environment:

      • Works in a patient care environment and is exposed to x-rays, infectious diseases, contaminated needles, as well as

      unpleasant odors and patient care activities.
