Department Overview:
Literacy Network's mission is to help adults in Dane County build skills, reach goals, and connect communities. Literacy Network is a non-profit organization that offers free classes and tutoring for adults. Programs include English (ESL), Citizenship, GED/HSED, Essential Literacy (ABE), and Transitions. Anticipated Hours Per Week:
Minimum: 8 Maximum: 10 Schedule:
8-10 hours per week
Interns are required to attend onboarding training on the following dates:
-Tuesday, May 13 from 6-8pm virtual on Zoom
-Wednesday, May 14 from 5-8pm at Literacy NetworkSalary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:
$15.00 Number of Positions:
11 Qualifications:
-One year of community college or university education, or relevant life or work experience
-Fluency in spoken and written English
-Reliable technology and access to internet, Zoom, and email
-Reliable transportation to in-person classes at Literacy Network or community site
UW-Madison students with work-study eligibility are encouraged to apply and to use their work-study award. Work study is not required for the position.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Preferred candidates will have experience with (or an interest in learning more about):
-Lesson planning
-Adult education
-Working with people of various cultures
-ESL lesson planning/instruction
-Learning a second languagePosition Summary/Job Duties:
Internship Responsibilities:
-Attend paid trainings before and during the semester
-Commit to 8-10 hours weekly for an entire semester: 2 hours/week at your session; remaining hours to prepare for your session
-Prepare individualized lesson plans for tutor/student pairs
-Manage your weekly session (arranging room, tracking attendance, scheduling, documentation, and providing support as needed)
-Tutor students as needed when your session is short tutors
-Make weekly reminder phone calls to students in your session
-Help facilitate end-of-semester reportingPhysical Demands:
