      Park Ranger III is the first-level supervisor in the Park Ranger series responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a County park or park program. Park Rangers at this level also assist in the planning and implementation of natural resource management, visitor services and facility maintenance activities of the assigned park or program.

      The ideal candidate will have three years of journey-level experience as a Park Ranger, which includes responsibilities in facilitating special projects and coordinating staff and volunteers.

      Duties include assisting in the development and maintenance of County parks or park programs; participating in the preparation and administration of the budget for an assigned park or program; supervising and preparing schedules, training and evaluating staff; investigating and resolving park patron complaints and preparing reports of findings; preparing reports and maintaining records of park or program activities; performing construction and maintenance tasks relating to the development and upkeep of park lands and facilities; and maintaining and operating various types of park equipment and tools.Departmental Status:
      An applicant must be a current County of San Mateo employee of the Parks Department, with at least 1040 hours (equivalent to six months) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term, and SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date may apply.

      Licensure/Certification:
      Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent; acquisition of Red Cross First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate within the first six months of employment; acquisition of a POST 832 Law Enforcement certificate within the first year of employment.

      Education and Experience:
      Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is three years of experience in park or park facility management, operations and maintenance.

      Knowledge of:
      Park management, practices and operations; horticulture, forestry, marine sciences and natural resources; principles of park administration, such as fee collection, park patrol and park interpretation; County park features and natural resources; County park rules, regulations, laws and ordinances; tools and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical and related work; basic first aid; monetary and statistical record keeping; principles of supervision and training; budget preparation and administration.

      Skill/Ability to:
      Train, supervise, coordinate and direct the activities of subordinate personnel; determine work priorities and effectively coordinate and schedule the necessary personnel and equipment required in the operations and maintenance of a park; perform arithmetic calculations in detailing budget requests and estimating various costs and to manage the park budget; develop and update park rules and regulations; read and interpret illustrative construction and design drawings; detect safety hazards within a park and recommend corrective action; maintain records of park operations and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with park patrons and others; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; administer first aid.Departmental Promotional Only.       The examination will consist of an application screening (weight: pass/fail) based heavily on the candidate's responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight: 100%) which may include a pre-interview written exercise and/or performance exercise(s). Depending on the number of applicants an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group candidates by level of qualification. Because of this process, not all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
