This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Park Rangers perform a variety of assignments in carrying out the overall District policies and procedures concerning the conservation and use of water resource development projects.

Duties

Enforces laws and regulations regarding project use, patrols recreation areas, directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic, maintains crowd control, and issues citation warnings or violation notices.
Responds and assists with emergency situations, including potential to be dispatched by local law enforcement and emergency medical services.
Develops and conducts interpretive talks and guided tour programs.
May be required to trim tree limbs around camping facilities, move trash cans and picnic tables and engage in other similar light maintenance-type duties
Collects and records information on items such as water quality and sediment samples, vegetation, noxious weed infestation, wildlife and fish populations, and erosion control and site rehabilitation problems.
Confirms or assists in establishing Government property lines through the use of various instruments and records including transit and level, real estate maps, aerial photographs, and deeds.

Requirements

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
One year trial/probationary period may be required.
This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% for official duties/training.
Incumbent must be at least 18 years old to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-03 General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience which includes administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND I have a minimum of three months of specialized experience performing work for a recreation program (i.e. fishing, water skiing, camping, hiking, or other outdoor recreation activities either paid or voluntary work).

OR

Education: One year of education above the high school level with six semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 9. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages.

GS-04 General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience which includes administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND I have a minimum of six months of specialized experience performing work for a recreation program (i.e. fishing, water skiing, camping, hiking, or other outdoor recreation activities either paid or voluntary work).

OR

Education: Two years of education above the high school level with twelve semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
