      Duties will include blood draws, handling of specimens and restocking of clinical rooms on a Friday morning.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.

      West Moors Village Surgery must ensure that the post holder has access to appropriate clinical supervision and an appropriate named individual in the organisation to provide general advice and support on a day-to-day basis.

      The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

      a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample

      b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

      c. Maintaining accurate patient records on Systmone

      d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

      e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

      f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

      g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff

      h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

      Secondary Responsibilities

      In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist assistant may be requested to:

      a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

      b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

      c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

      Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
