      ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

      Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, the Payroll Manager supervises the Payroll Accountants. As a Payroll Manager, you will oversee the processing of semi-monthly payroll and assist with payroll-related tax and income reporting such as State Quarterly reports, W2s and 1095s. This position will work closely with Payroll, PEO (Personnel Employment Organization), HR People & Culture, and other payroll-related vendors to ensure processes are completed in a timely manner. The Payroll Manager is responsible for monthly and annual processes such as reconciliations and assists with audit requirements.

      LOGISTICS

      Internews has US offices in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC which support a hybrid workforce, with staff working remotely, fully in-office, or partially remote. This is a remote-based role, and candidates based anywhere in the Pacific time zone will be considered.

      DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

      • Supervise and mentor Payroll Accountants and Payroll Finance Associates, fostering professional growth and development.
      • Ensure corporate payroll is accurate and completed in accordance with payroll dates.
      • Ensure PEO processing with multiple vendors is accurate, timely, and complete, identifying and carrying out plans to improve processes.
      • Oversee maintenance of payroll records in accordance with the organization's record retention policy.
      • Reconcile general ledger balance sheet accounts related to payroll on a monthly basis.
      • Review reconciliation prepared by payroll staff for balance sheet accounts.
      • Review payroll processing to ensure accuracy related to deductions, advances, HR allowances, retirement/pension and taxes, identifying and resolving issues as needed.
      • Review disbursements and journal entries to ensure proper coding and approvals.
      • Complete audit-related requests such as DBA, 401k, and annual audit requests.
      • Review all state and federal quarterly and annual tax returns including but not limited to W2s, W3s, 941s, and 1095s prepared by Payroll Accountants; ensure filings are completed in a timely manner.
      • Maintain confidentiality in all payroll and personnel matters.
      • Recommend actions to be taken for identified financial and business risk situations and participate in the continuous improvement of accounting processes.
      • Collaborate in the development and introduction of accounting processes and procedures for continuous improvement of accounting methods.
      • Provide coaching on Finance & Accounting/Payroll best practices to staff in other departments as needed.

      QUALIFICATIONS WE'RE LOOKING FOR

      Required

      • Minimum seven years of payroll management or equivalent accounting experience, with increasingly complex responsibilities including direct supervisory experience.
      • Associate's degree OR equivalent lived/professional experience.
      • General knowledge of not-for-profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
      • Experience in multi-state payroll.
      • Experience in the review, development, and implementation of accounting processes for best practices, efficiency, and standardized internal control processes.
      • Technical and logistical problem-solving capabilities and ability to manage competing deadlines.
      • High degree of social adaptability and sensitivity to cultural differences.
      • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
      • Proven ability to effectively mentor direct reports.
      • Advanced MS Office Suite skills, particularly Excel.
      • Technical and logistical problem-solving capabilities and ability to manage competing deadlines.
      • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
      • High degree of social adaptability and sensitivity to cultural differences.
      • Intermediate MS Office suite skills, particularly Excel.
      • Ability to self-manage competing deadlines.

      Preferred

      • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or a closely related field.
      • Working knowledge of Uniform Guidance 2CFR200.
      • Experience with enterprise-level non-profit accounting software.
      • Experience working with PEO support and processing a significant asset.
      • Experience in accounting procedures, training to a variety of staff skill levels.
      • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. Working knowledge of OMB Circulars A-133 and A-122

      The annual salary range for this position is US $80,100 - US $105,100.
