      Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our innovative and supportive multi-disciplinary team within The Rural Practice Network PCN. This role offers the opportunity to work across our member practices and be actively involved in delivering high-quality, cost-effective medicines optimisation and patient care as part of the national PCN Direct Enhanced Service (DES).

You will play a key role in improving the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of prescribing, support medication reviews, and enhance the overall medicines management systems across the PCN.

      Main duties of the job

      Clinical Responsibilities

      • Undertake patient-facing and patient-supporting roles to promote safe and effective use of medicines through shared decision-making.

      • Conduct medicine optimisation activities such as medication reviews, medicines reconciliation, and support effective administration (e.g., inhaler technique).

      • Support care home residents and patients transitioning between care settings by aligning medicines and ensuring safe handovers.

      • Assist with shared care protocols and liaise with specialist pharmacists for complex cases.

      • Promote antimicrobial stewardship by supporting initiatives that reduce inappropriate prescribing.

      • Contribute to Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), enhanced services, and PCN DES requirements through audits and improvement measures.

      Technical and Administrative Responsibilities

      • Improve medicines optimisation systems by developing processes to minimise waste, support efficient ordering, and manage high-risk medications.

      • Supervise and support reception and administrative teams to effectively manage prescription requests.

      • Lead on implementation and training related to the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and repeat prescribing systems.

      • Work closely with community pharmacies, secondary care, and social care teams to promote integrated working.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
