      The City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the position of Police Aide (Part-Time) to fill one (1) current vacancy. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.

      DESCRIPTION
      Under direct supervision, performs assignments restricted to non-enforcement police-related functions, assists police officers in non-hazardous duties, performs communications duties, processes prisoners, and performs related clerical duties.

      SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
      Receives direct supervision from supervisory and management staff.

      CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
      Police Aide is a non-sworn classification used to perform routine, non-hazardous work in one or more assigned areas of the police department. Incumbents perform assignments involving answering routine questions, light administrative work, performs traffic control and enforce/issue parking violations. Incumbents may be assigned to any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
      Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
      • Furnish general information and assist the public at the front counter and over the telephone
      • Perform computer data entries and general records duties
      • Take minor police reports
      • Perform traffic control direction at public gathering places and traffic collision scenes
      • Issue parking violations and bicycle citations
      • Mark vehicles with warning tags for various traffic violations
      • Make residential vacation checks
      • Perform messenger duties for various divisions of the police department
      • May accompany experienced officers on routine patrol
      • Search files and obtain automated records management system data pertaining to traffic accidents, citations issued and cost recovery reports
      • Assist in the booking of prisoners
      • Provide public fingerprinting service
      • Provide or arrange for routine service to police vehicles and radio equipment and conduct inventory of supplies in police vehicles
      • Performs other duties as assigned
      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
      Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
      • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and,
      • Six (6) months of full-time experience involving extensive public contact

      LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
      • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Driver's License is required at the time of hire and must be maintained during the course of employment
      KNOWLEDGE OF

      • Understanding of City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols
      • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff
      • Understanding of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
      • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed

      ABILITY TO
      • Learn and correctly interpret and apply laws pertinent to vehicle codes and local ordinances
      • Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system
      • Read and interpret maps
      • Input data into a computerized records management system
      • Efficiently operate office equipment
      • Follow written and oral instructions
      • Safely operate a motor vehicle
      • Work various shifts, holidays and/or weekends
      • Establish and maintain an effective work relationship with those contacted in the performance of required duties

      Physical Demands
      Must possess mobility to work in the field and in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; vision to read printed materials, a computer screen, and examine evidence; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking on uneven terrain and landscapes when performing parking enforcement duties. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate parking enforcement related tools and equipment. Position in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.

      Environmental CONDITIONS
      The employee typically works in both field and office conditions. The employee frequently works outdoors and is exposed to variable weather conditions as well as road traffic. The noise level can occasionally be loud, above 85 decibels, when performing field duties on public streets. Frequent driving is required for traffic control monitoring and to respond to accidents. When working indoors, the employee works in office conditions with a noise level that is quiet or moderately quiet, at or below 85 decibels.

      This is a part time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited not to exceed 980 hours per fiscal year. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

      SELECTION PROCESS
      Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application materials that they meet the employment standards outlined above.       SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
      The selected candidate must successfully complete pre-employment clearances, which may include a physical, drug screen, and Live Scan background investigation. Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.
