The Principal Data Scientist of Star Ratings Analytics within UHC Medicare & Retirement will lead a team that originally designed and continues to reimagine the foundational metrics and analytics surrounding star ratings at UHG, making them more actionable, transparent, accurate, and flexible. The principal will integrate new relationships around the company, new data sources, and new methods/technologies along the way. As a subject matter expert, the director will recommend best approaches to transform the healthcare industry.

      Primary Responsibilities:

      • Lead and develop your team of analysts to provide predictive modeling, prioritization, innovative reporting, and subject-matter expertise
      • Build solid relationships within the organization including finance, IT, product, actuarial/underwriting, clinical, and operations
      • Initiate and provide structure to long-term and recurring projects
      • Continually reevaluate and reimagine operational metrics and reporting
      • Translate highly complex concepts in ways that can be understood by a variety of audiences including senior leaders
      • Understand and explain drivers of apparent quality trends (observation bias, metric changes, operational changes, industry trends)
      • Initiate and foster unique and innovative solutions and ideas
      • Bring disparate data together with knowledge of health care and government policy to develop and communicate sound business recommendations to leaders throughout the organization

      Required Qualifications:

      • Undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Economics, or similar
      • 5+ years of experience identifying healthcare trends
      • 3+ years of academic and/or professional experience conducting statistical regression models
      • 3+ years of academic and/or professional experience with large/complex data manipulation, cleansing, storage, and reporting
      • Demonstrated experience leading groups
      • Demonstrated experience presenting to senior leaders
      • Intermediate or higher level of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Experience supervising or managing analytical staff
      • Experience with Medicare Advantage products
      • Proven ability to command of data storage theory and design
      • Proven critical thinker- this role will need to evaluate merits of new and innovative ideas and make sound decisions
      • Proven excellent communicator - this role will need to be comfortable presenting program objectives, process, and performance in multiple setting
      • Proven self-motivated and able to demonstrate an innate ability to absorb new concepts, technical frameworks, program paradigms while employing them creatively to solve complex analytical problems
      • Proven solid relationship building skills with internal and practice teams to drive goal alignment
      • Proven high degree of emotional intelligence
      • Proven SQL, SAS, Python, Oracle, Hadoop, Hive, R, Excel, VBA, Linux/Bash, Spark skills

      California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $101,200 to $184,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
