Job Description
- Req#: R02650
- Operates a variety of equipment such as pumps, compressors, valves, and control systems.
- Performs surveillance rounds in process operating units to monitor and accurately record process conditions such as temperatures, pressures, and flow rates.
- Pull process samples and run qualitative lab tests.
- Performs equipment maintenance such as clearing/cleaning equipment, adding lube oil, tightening valve packing, changing filters, small bore piping and steam traps, etc.
- Follows written guidelines, work instructions and procedures which are critical for safe operation and regulatory compliance.
- Communicates with Console Operator, supervision, and support staff to exchange information on process conditions and relate any changes made or needed.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve abnormal conditions.
- Prepares equipment for maintenance and issues safe work permits.
- Performs cleaning and housekeeping of assigned units.
- Understands process flow, basic chemistry associated with assigned units, equipment line-ups, and all unit safety equipment, including isolation points.
- Review computer data and computer-generated schematics to ensure process is optimized.
- Ensures proper shift turnover by providing effective written and oral communication to the relieving shift.
- Read and understand technical procedures and materials.
- Learn computer software associated with process operations.
- Active participation in required training and course work to maintain job qualifications.
- Work Schedule:
- Work a rotating shift schedule, including holiday, night, and weekend coverage
- Work Overtime as required
- Participate in callout/standby coverage
- Occasionally an altered work schedule over an extended period may be required.
- 5-10% travel requirements for mandatory training per year.
- Physical Requirements:
- Walk up and down steps
- Climb ladders up to 250 feet in height
- Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Work in the Following Conditions:
- Work and collaborate in a team environment
- Communicate clearly via 2-way radio in English
- Work in enclosed/confined spaces such as tanks and vessels
- Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
- Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
- Wear fire retardant clothing, respirator, ear and eye protection and other personal protective equipment
- Work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Required to participate in the Fire Response Team, which includes the use of rescue and fire suppression equipment and techniques (e.g. ladders, hoses, etc.), don full-body Fire Retardant gear, and use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Possess a valid Drivers’ License
- Candidate must have active TWIC card or be able to obtain a TWIC card. Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate degree or Technical certification in Process Technology
- Experience as a process operator in a refinery or manufacturing environment
- Passing of pre-employment testing
- Successful completion of pre-employment requirements including physical agility test, physical, background check, and drug/alcohol screening

The Process Operator Start position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the United Steelworkers Local Union No. 5 and the Martinez Refining Company LLC. The hourly pay rate for this position is $40.25, based on qualification requirements in the CBA.
