      We are looking for a Product Development Engineer/Scientist to join our Richmond, VA team.

      The Paper Product and Application Development Engineer/Scientist will work within the electrical paper application development team which supports markets focused on electrical infrastructure and electric vehicles. This business segment sells insulating materials from the Nomex® family of product offerings to the broader electrical industry. The applications development team is responsible for the development of innovative products to serve the market’s needs, as well as for technical customer service for the Nomex® insulating products used in the industry.

      Expected travel is 10-25% which includes international travel on occasion.

      Requirements:

      • Experience in paper design, lab and pilot papermaking, and paper manufacturing, preferably including scale-up from pilot- to commercial-scale production.
      • Detailed knowledge of paper and wet-laid nonwoven manufacturing methodologies as well as relevant material evaluation methods.
      • Experience with downstream processes typically used with paper products such as lamination, printing, slitting, coating, or folding is a plus.
      • Development of new or modified paper offerings for our electrical insulation market space. This encompasses processing of synthetic and inorganic fibers, and inorganic additives in paper stock systems as well as combination of materials with various films and/or adhesives.
      • Relevant to developing new papers, this position involves designing and managing trials on lab, pilot, and commercial scales, including close collaboration with manufacturing and supply chain in scale-up and commercialization of new paper products and processes.
      • Managing long-term testing programs with the global electrical testing lab(s), analyzing the fundamental aspects of paper structures and raw ingredient properties, analyzing and interpreting data, interfacing with electrical insulation specialists within the global team, collecting and interpreting customer feedback on unmet needs and experience with new products, as well as interfacing with the marketing and sales organization to adjust technology programs to support business direction.
      • Working with industry boards and standards setting organizations and developing publications that communicate research findings to the industry.

      Qualifications & Capabilities required for this role:

      • BS in Engineering or related technical discipline (such as chemistry, materials science, physics) with specialization in pulp and paper technology, preferably with an advanced degree such as MS or PhD
      • Experience in paper and/or wetlaid nonwoven manufacturing, new process, and product development (minimum of 5/10 years)
      • Experience with multiple paper or sheet structure web- forming technologies and processes.
      • Demonstrated technical capability, particularly in problem solving and analysis.
      • Experience with designed experimentation and statistics, process capability analysis
      • Effective verbal and written English communication skills
      • Effective interpersonal skills to lead and mentor teams and to work with others who have diverse skills, education, and backgrounds
      • Ability to work in a fast-paced, global, customer-focused environment
