      Main Purpose and Function

      The Program Assistant II works under the direction of a supervisor, primarily the Facility Rentals Supervisor or Special Events Coordinator supporting special events such as Festival of Lights, Sakura Days Japan Fair, the All British Field Meet, Sweet Sounds of Summer, Fleurs de Villes and Harvest Days, and facility rentals such as weddings and meetings at VanDusen Botanical Garden, Bloedel Conservatory and the Celebration Pavilion located at Queen Elizabeth Park.

      Specific Duties and Responsibilities

      This position requires excellent interpersonal and communications skills, enthusiasm, and a strong appreciation for special events. The successful candidate must be able to work well both independently and in teams. The scope of this work may include (but is not limited to): assisting in carrying out special events, assisting with load in and load out of vehicles in the garden, monitoring the safety and behaviour of event participants, ensuring that site rules and regulations are followed, building security and lock up, event set up and take down including décor, tables and chairs, and A/V equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring participant safety at events and providing first aid services.

      Hours of work will vary and will include many evening and weekend shifts.

      Qualifications
      Education and Experience:

      • Completion of Grade 12 and some related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
      • Special events experience is an asset
      • Standard or Emergency First Aid with CPR-C required

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      • Working knowledge of the behaviour, needs, and interests typical of participants of all ages
      • Ability to effectively monitor activities and behaviour of participants
      • Ability to assist in the planning and carrying out of special events or programs
      • Ability to provide first aid as required
      • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other facility staff
      • Ability to ensure the care, welfare, safety and security of patrons is prioritised

      Driver's License and Record Checks:
      A Police Information Check (PIC) that includes a Vulnerable Sector Check is a requirement of this position.

      The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
