Pullen Arts Center is a dynamic community arts and craft education facility and maker space with studios, galleries, and classrooms. Located near downtown Raleigh and NCSU, Pullen Arts supports visual and craft artists of all ages and levels of experience through classes, workshops, exhibitions, and community events.
The recently expanded and renovated Center features four professionally equipped studios: a bookmaking & printmaking studio, a metals studio, a painting studio, and a pottery studio. These spaces are available for independent use by member artists and for media-specific workshops and classes. The studios are complemented by separate youth, pottery, and multi-purpose classrooms. Youth, Teen, Adult, and Family studio-based classes in bookmaking, drawing, pottery, jewelry, painting, and printmaking are designed and led by professional teaching artists year-round. Pullen has three gallery spaces that exhibit the work of 70 artists annually. The Main Gallery features solo and small group exhibitions for emerging and professional artists, the Youth & Teen Gallery features works by artists 17 years old and younger and the Chalk Wall Mural Space features chalk murals by local student, emerging and professional artists.
The Assistant Director will work with teaching artists to develop and oversee center programs at Pullen Arts and will be responsible for expanding, evaluating, and enhancing studio-based programming for all ages. This position plays a key role in the direct oversight of all summer camp programming. They will work closely with the Center Director, playing a critical role in carrying out day-to-day operations and managing part-time administrative staff and teaching artists.
The Assistant Director will have an understanding of and experience in managing visual art and craft programming, community engagement, inclusion and accessibility, and connecting with historically underserved populations. The Assistant Director will demonstrate commitment to breaking down barriers to participation in visual arts programming and will have a firm grasp of the benefit that a community visual arts education facility can provide.

- Foster a creative community education and maker space for artists of all levels through programming that inspires, empowers, and nurtures participants to grow as artists, craftspeople, and creative community members.
- Manage existing programs and develop new programs for children, teens, and families. Maintain awareness of facility schedule including programs, rentals, and special events.
- Program management responsibilities include program curriculum planning; assigning teaching artists and staff; developing a program budget; tracking program expenditures and revenue; procuring supplies and equipment; scheduling; marketing programs; student, parent, and teaching artist communications; class observation; managing records including registrations, attendance, and surveys; and managing patron concerns.
- Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance of studios and studio equipment. Recommend equipment repair, replacement, or purchase.
- Following completion of training, assist with oversight of chemical and/or hazardous materials management in studios.
- Regularly inspect park grounds and exterior amenities. Maintain awareness of Facility calendar, North Pullen Campus calendar, and NCSU calendar.
- Provide leadership to align the team with Raleigh Arts Plan and City of Raleigh goals for community arts, collaboratively respond to community needs and feedback, and foster a team of teaching artists, staff, and studio coordinators who feel connected to participants and the larger creative community.
- Recruit and hire teaching artists, front desk, studio, and camp staff. Supervise the work of front desk, studio, and camp staff including scheduling staff, performance evaluations, and addressing and documenting performance issues.
- Conduct regular staff meetings and/or manage staff communications and develop and conduct staff training(s) as needed. Plan front desk schedule work schedules and assign work to staff. Assist with verifying and entering bi-weekly payroll.
- This position requires being accessible for after-hours needs such as supporting staff, responding to alarms, emergency situations or inclement weather, and managing patrons and staff during emergency situations.

Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and up to one year of related experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications - Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
