Job Description
- Req#: R3412
Apply geological principals and independent judgement, incorporating a thorough knowledge of near-surface geological processes to map the surficial geology of northern and southern Alberta, based on field observations and the interpretation of digital elevation models and aerial photographs.
Identify and model the subsurface distribution of Quaternary stratigraphic units and the bedrock unconformity utilizing field observations and well data, including core, water well records, geophysical logs and geophysical survey data where available.
Conduct sediment sampling for laboratory analyses (including heavy mineral and geochemical determinations), evaluate analytical processing and report on results.
Disseminate information and knowledge in geological maps and reports that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the AGS and the AER.
Collaborate with hydrogeologists to incorporate geological data, mapped surfaces, and models into conceptual and numerical groundwater models.
Plan and manage field projects including safety aspects, and supervision of field staff.
Interact with peers in universities and provincial government departments.
Post- graduate degree, preferably a relevant M.Sc. or Ph.D in Geology.
5-7 years of relevant industry, academia, or government geoscience experience.
Experience producing surficial geology maps.
Experience with geophysical log interpretation, particularly related to Quaternary sediments and underlying bedrock units as well as applying geological knowledge to issues related to groundwater is advantageous.
Experience with geophysical log interpretation, particularly related to Quaternary sediments and picking top of bedrock.
Experience with using Kingdom and ArcGIS (for generating cross-sections, structure maps and isopach maps) and geological modelling software such as Petrel or Leapfrog is preferred.
Extensive knowledge of sedimentary processes in glacial and non-glacial environments paired with the ability and willingness to undertake field mapping projects in remote areas of Alberta.
Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply creative thinking to resolve complex issues.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (preferably demonstrated by one or more publications).
All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking three Quaternary Geologists to provide high-resolution surficial geologic maps and near-surface stratigraphic models for projects being conducted in southern Alberta and the Athabasca Oil Sands region. Our objective in these regions is to advance the delineation of near-surface aquifer systems and quantify groundwater conditions. You will provide a major contribution to the mapping and stratigraphic understanding of Alberta’s Quaternary sediments and will inform the work of multidisciplinary teams to provide important new details on the quality, quantity and location of groundwater across these regions.
This information will enable more effective and efficient regulatory decisions for those applying to access groundwater and help inform groundwater monitoring programs to ensure sustainable use and resiliency of Alberta’s groundwater resources. You will fill an important role in our project teams focused on disseminating groundwater data and geoscience products to decision-makers, water licence-holders, and rural/urban municipalities through publications and web-hosted interactive applications that provide a visualization of probable groundwater source areas.
