- Ranger/Diver II
- Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increase: 5% effective 7/1/25
- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Ranger/Diver I employees will be required to work varying shifts including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Ranger/Diver I employees typically report to work at the San Vicente Operations Yard and may also report to any of the City's reservoirs or other Public Utilities Department facilities including the Chollas Operations Yard, MOC (Kearny Mesa Operations Yard), and water treatment plants.
- Ranger/Diver I employees may work in remote locations and may be required to perform or oversee a variety of emergencies with back-up emergency support response times greater than 20 minutes.
- Ranger/Diver I employees are required to pass a swimming/dive performance test and maintain required certifications and training as a condition of employment.
- In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Ranger/Diver I positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
- A valid California Boater Card issued by the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is required at the time of hire unless you meet one of the exemptions listed on http://californiaboatercard.com/faqs-2/.
- Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).
- National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI).
- Scuba Schools International (SSI).
- Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).
- Other equivalent organization (e.g., military-sponsored dive program).
- A valid County of San Diego Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) Certificate.
- Successful completion of a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved Penal Code 832 course covering the powers of arrest.
- Dive Rescue Certificate.
- Dive Master Certificate and/or more advanced dive training and experience.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
- City of San Diego Lifeguard Open Water Academy Certificate.
- California Department of Boating and Waterways Boating Certificate.
- Experience diving in different underwater environments (e.g., confined and elevated spaces, potable water systems, hazardous or contaminated water).
- Proof of basic or higher level diving certificate.
- A timed 250-yard swim test which must be completed under 5 minutes.
- Perform a free dive to locate and recover a five-pound object at a depth of up to 12 feet and bring it to the surface.
- Lift a 50lb weight above shoulder height.
- Performance test weight......100%
- Candidates must provide valid government-issued photo identification (e.g., driver license, military ID, Department of Motor Vehicles ID or passport) on the day of the performance test.

Ranger/Diver I positions patrol by foot and in emergency-equipped vehicles and vessels to assist patrons in distress and to ensure the safety of the public engaged in all recreational activities at City lakes; maintain vigilant surveillance over an assigned area; identify hazards and at-risk public behaviors to proactively reduce accidents; perform shoreline and water-related rescues; enforce Municipal, County and State laws; issue warnings and citations; testify in court regarding matters of enforcement and litigation; administer first aid, emergency care and life support in the capacity of an Emergency Medical Technician; act as a first responder in emergencies until advanced life support personnel arrive; perform dive team support; perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled underwater dive tasks; assist in maintaining water quality and safeguard sensitive biological and archeological resources; keep accurate records, write reports and maintain safety equipment, facilities and supplies; interact regularly with the public providing information, warnings and support services; monitor emergency radio traffic and respond or dispatch personnel to calls for assistance; assist in conducting aquatic events and water safety programs; perform and document quagga mussel inspections; maintain required certifications and training; and perform other duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATION: Basic or higher level diving certificate from ONE of the following options:
