      Buncombe County's Parks and Recreation Department is hiring for a Recreation Program Assistant. This position will report to our Parks Program Coordinator and will work on various Parks events and programs at Buncombe County Parks. Most of the work will be focused Community Outreach and Recreation Experiences (CORE) programming and will include: adult kickball, children's fishing tournaments, the Festival of Lights, etc.

      These positions will be Pro Re Nata (PRN). This means:

      • PRN is an as - needed position filled by an individual whose duties and responsibilities are required on a n annually - recurring , seasonal , or on-call basis . These positions require a job posting and recruiting process .

      • PRN workers are eligible for cost-of-living adjustments.

      • The maximum number of hours a PRN worker can perform is 900 hours per year.

      • P RN workers must work at leas t one shift in each calendar year to remain an active employee.

      • A PRN worker is not eligible for severance pay upon separation , paid holidays, sick leave, or any other employee-specified benefit per Buncombe County’s Benefits and Leave Policies .

      Purpose of the position:

      The primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of tasks for programming and special events with the Recreation Department.

      Minimum Educati on, Training and/or Experience :

      High school diploma or equivalent and a m inimum of one (1) year of experience in customer services or programming for youth, adults, and/or seniors ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

      Additional Training and Experience: None

      License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.

      Essential Functions of the position:

      • Plan and assist with the organization and oversight of park events and programs for youth, adults, and seniors .

      • Implement program and event activities for a variety of ages and abilities.

      • Promote good public relations and communication with citizens using the park and recreation facilities.

      • Participate in various fee collection , event registration , and evaluation activities .

      • May perform a variety of duties associated with the daily use of park areas and facilities .

      • Ability to work weekends, evenings and nights as needed.

      • Perform other related duties as assigned.

      Knowled ge, Skills, Abilities :

      • Ability to plan and implement programs and events for youth, adults and seniors.

      • Ability to manage groups of youth and provide a wide range of physical and creative activities .

      • Ability to assist with outdoor recreation activities including, but not limited to hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, and kayaking.

      • Ability to use small office equipment and computers.

      • Ability to adapt to a work environment that may include exposure to outdoor climate, dust and dirt, exposure to the hazards of working in and near traffic, exposure to various weather related conditions , and exposure to domestic and wild animals.

      • Ability to answer questions and provide information to the public.

      • Ability to speak, understand and communicate information and ideas so others may understand.

      • Ability to use and/ or repair small equipment.

      In order to uphold internal pay parity and equity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current Buncombe County employees. All new employees are paid according to their years of relevant education and experience above minimum requirements for the position and employees have the opportunity to obtain pay increases via cost of living increases and promotions.
