      The recreation ranger may work and travel in poor weather and travel conditions. This position will require a willingness to work periodically during irregular hours, some weekends, and occasional holidays. The position requires spending time away from home or permanent workstation. Approximately 25% of the time is spent traveling. Weekend and evening work is common. Work is typically accomplished without immediate supervision.

      Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 2 is in west central Montana. The character of the region is defined by Rocky Mountain peaks reach above 10,000 feet and valley trout streams stretching over 1,500 miles. Deer, elk, moose, sheep, black bears, and mountain goats inhabit the region, providing a diversity of hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities. Over 62% of the region is public land, offering a variety of recreational opportunities to area residents and visitors. Region 2 currently manages ten state parks, fifteen wildlife management areas, and over 75 fishing access sites.

      River recreation on the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, and Blackfoot rivers provide diverse opportunities for float or wade angling, floating on inner tubes, whitewater rafting, and scenic floating. The region has several mountain ranges and unique wildlife habitat that blends with privately owned and agricultural lands in lower elevations. The diverse landscape offers a wealth of recreational opportunity for fishing, hunting, exploring, hiking, skiing, camping, floating, sightseeing, birdwatching, picnicking, bike riding, wildlife viewing, ATV riding, snowmobiling, and boating.

      The region's largest community, Missoula, sits on the banks of the Clark Fork River and is home to the University of Montana. Missoula is a cultural and commercial center for the region, supporting activities such as indoor and outdoor concerts, live theatre venues, festivals, and art walks. The area is within 3-4 hours of both Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks and offers sites of national significance such as the National Bison Range, Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, Flathead Lake, Travelers' Rest, Lalo Trail, and Nez Perce Trail National Historic Landmarks, and the Ice Age Flood National Trail.

      Job Duties:

      The Blackfoot Recreation Ranger assists in all aspects of non-maintenance operations at FWP recreation sites within the Blackfoot Recreation District. This position assists the recreation manager with recreation on the Blackfoot River and 27 associated fishing access sites (11 with campgrounds), 8 float-in campsites, and a special recreation permitting (SRP) for commercial use. This requires planning for and working at various recreation sites within this geographic area and in the office. The Blackfoot Ranger also works in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) field staff to manage a BLM campground and 3 day use sites.

      This work primarily encompasses broad field duties that includes floating the Blackfoot River on a regular basis to monitor and check for recreational use compliance. This position assists in daily site and program operations, visitor contacts, rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, and education at sites. The Blackfoot Recreation Ranger provides resource stewardship in a proactive manner, providing recommendations to the Recreation Manager based on visitor use patterns, staff, and resource conditions. This position assists the manager in the supervision of a seasonal recreation technician with direction, training, and evaluations when assigned. This position assists the Blackfoot Recreation Manager with the SRP program and permits.

      The Blackfoot River valley is a busy recreation area and is popular among anglers, floaters, kayakers, campers and day users. The Recreation Ranger would have responsibilities to monitor river use, on and off the water. The Blackfoot Recreation Ranger assists with tracking hazards, and visitor use patterns at specific recreation sites, including commercial and non-commercial use.

      Physical and Environmental Demands:

      · Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

      · Ability to assist public independently, in extremely harsh terrain, and at night.

      · Occasional travel.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      · Knowledge of recreation management, familiarity with natural and cultural resource management principles, including historical and current issues.

      · Background in natural resources, recreation, and cultural resources.

      · Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a concise and interpretable manner, with department employees, the public, special interest groups and appropriate land management agencies.

      · Proficiency in the safe handling and operation of site-specific modes of transportation, such as motorized and non-motorized watercraft, bicycles, and snow machines.

      · Knowledge of the laws, policies, and regulations under which the agency operates.

      · Ability to negotiate, explain, and diffuse conflict among parties with differing views and visitors frustrated with department/site rules and policy.

      · Ability to work effectively in extreme environmental conditions.

      · Willingness to work in various locations, conditions, and variable days/hours.

      · Must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors.

      Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

      The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and or recreation management, archeology, geology, or related fields. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
