      Job Summary

      The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 4 months. Please note this will be 24 hours per week; M-W, 8-5 pm.

      The School of Dentistry’s Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences’ Faculty Group Practice (FGP) and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) comprises of eight to eleven faculty and 4 residents practicing in comprehensive general dentistry. The FGP has one full time dental hygienist, several registered dental assistants, and administrative assistants. The Registered Dental Assistant will be part of a team of clinic staff, setting high standards in customer relations and clinical care for the practice. Incumbent will work chair-side with faculty, take dental x-ray films, chart dental findings, input medical and dental histories, and overall administrative tasks associated with the Practice.

      Incumbent will be responsible for assisting several faculty and residents in the treatment of patients with general dentistry and prosthodontics needs (crowns, bridges, removable dentures and implant crowns.)

      Key Responsibilities:

      • Chairside Assisting

        • Assist dentist in four-handed dentistry
        • Furnish necessary instruments and materials during procedure
        • Anticipate forthcoming procedures and prepare accordingly
        • Responsible for dispensing materials in a prepared manner with proper control for anesthetics, needles, and carpules, utilizing sharps containers
      • Infection Control

        • Maintain clean and orderly cubicles
        • Use proper barriers when setting up cubicles
        • After treatment procedures, flush water lines, disinfect (spray and wipe all carts and counters), remove all instruments to sterilization area
        • Always wash hands, use gloves, mask, and wear goggles
      • Clinic Operations, Sterilization and Maintenance

        • Monitor and maintain adequate stock supplies
        • Restock doctor’s carts/floor carts as needed
        • During down time, thoroughly clean operatories; scrub down counters, chairs, and units; restock main supply cabinets
        • Monitor schedules, anticipate doctor’s needs, and inform doctors if patients are waiting
        • Perio charting is a priority
        • Presoak in enzyme solution, rinse, place in ultrasonic
        • Remove instruments from ultrasonic, check before wrapping, scrub with wire brush if necessary for appropriate procedures (amal/comp kit, prep kit, hygiene kit)
        • Prepare instruments for Central Sterilization pick-up
        • Wrap and label cassettes if necessary, place in autoclave
        • Always wear gloves, mask, and goggles
      • Radiology

        • Perform general radiology procedures including the exposure, development, and mounting of films, and mounting of x-rays
        • Restock and clean radiology unit on a rotating basis with FGP
      • Patient Flow

        • Monitor schedules, anticipate doctor’s needs, and inform doctor if patients are waiting
        • Perio charting is a priority
        • Greet and seat patients for Faculty/residents
        • Be aware of patients’ special needs

      Department Description

      UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

      Required Qualifications

      • RDA license
      • Knowledge of high clinical standards in dental assisting practices and the demonstrated ability to implement these standards. Ability to understand patients’ needs and the knowledge to meet those needs.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance and operation of dental equipment and instruments.
      • Sensitivity to patients’ cultural backgrounds; and ability to maintain confidentiality
      • Excellent multitasking and organization skills with ability to follow through to complete tasks
      • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance
      • Must have two years of Dental Assisting experience in a busy group dental practice
      • Familiarity with infection control policies and procedures; HIPAA

      Preferred Qualifications

      • AxiUm Practice Management Software; UCSF policies regarding cashiering, and ordering supplies
