      The Position
      Regional Environmental Specialist

      Job Summary

      As the Regional Environmental Specialist, you will manage all aspects of environmental compliance for all assigned plants & mines in the Eastern US. You will ensure that all permits, policies, and procedures are up-to-date and plant personnel understand their impacts on compliance. Must be able to accomplish all of the listed Key Tasks and Responsibilities while maintaining a high level of integrity.

      Location - Home-based, near a major airport on East Coast US

      Key Tasks and Responsibilities
      • Develop, initiate, and monitor environmental permit applications prior to expiration and respond to regulatory agency follow-up issues or requests for further information.
      • Prepare/submit all necessary compliance reports; maintain all records required for compliance demonstration to regulatory agencies; represent IMERYS during environmental regulatory compliance inspections.
      • Work with the cross functional groups to implement proactive compliance plans, procedures, programs and training to ensure compliance with environmental permits, applicable regulations, and internal protocols.
      • Reduce the impact on the local environment by developing plans, coordinating implementation, and verifying controls for all aspects of the environmental management system.
      • Assist in designing, preparing, implementing and maintaining site specific environmental initiatives.
      • Provide technical support to daily environmental operations, waste sampling and characterization for offsite disposal/treatment; implement all required environmental sampling and stack testing; provide regulatory support to air, water, stormwater compliance, wastewater treatment operations, etc.
      • Coordinating audits and inspections to ensure compliance with local, federal, and Imerys requirements. Inspect the various sites for environmental compliances and detail areas identified for improvements or system gaps.
      • Find out potential environmental risks and design a mitigation plan, assist with implementation, and conduct verification steps to ensure controls are being used.
      • Monitor changing regulations and ensure that all industrial operations are regulated as per the state and local changing conditions and provide environmental regulatory interpretations and engineering/technical support.
      • Lead investigations into environmental issues, identifying root causes, and developing appropriate corrective action plans.
      • Other duties as assigned.


      Education/Experience Requirements
      • Successful US-based candidates must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 before the employment start date unless exempted by applicable law
      • Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate technical discipline (such as Environmental, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related area)
      • Minimum 5 years experience in environmental or related fields involving environmental regulatory compliance, interpretation and permitting.
      • Professional Licenses - Environmental certifications such as CHMM or QEP are beneficial but not required. Relevant external certifications; e.g. Method 9, HAZWOPER, QISP, Title 22, etc.
      • Strong organizational, communication, data analysis, and tenacious problem solving skills
      • Strong interpersonal skills influencing the right behavior


      Required Activities

      1. 35% Office Environment - Environmental compliance activities involving PC use, minor lifting, etc.

      2. 40% - Variable field activities in Plant and Mining operations involving water, waste and other environmental sampling and stack sampling; data collection/field surveys for compliance reporting; working with operations on environmental compliance matters relating to impoundments, plant air & water pollution control equipment, etc. - all these involve climbing, hiking, carrying equipment and work around chemicals, minerals, water bodies and hot equipment.

      3. 25-50% - Travel to other IMERYS locations, consultant/vendor locations & professional meetings.
