      The Ohio State University’s (OSU) Department of Veterinary Preventative
      Medicine (VPM) Animal Influenza Ecology & Epidemiology Research
      Program (AIEERP) would like to hire a research assistant who would serve
      the laboratory in an interdisciplinary fashion. First, this individual would be
      capable of performing normal laboratory tasks, testing, and analysis of
      various experiments within the scope of ongoing projects in Columbus.
      Additionally, this individual will serve as primary individual to be scheduled
      for routine shifts at OSU’s Plant and Animal Agosecurity Research (PAAR)
      facility for ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) - H5N1-related
      projects. This study is of high interest to collaborators and will likely
      continue throughout this year and into the next. An individual is needed for
      the coordination and implementation of this project in conjunction with
      Wooster's PAAR facility, where the studies will be performed. This position
      may require frequent travel, unless the individual is based in Wooster, OH
      in order to fulfill responsibilities.
      Job description
      The Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine - Animal Influenza
      Ecology & Epidemiology Research Program plays a crucial role in the
      regional collection, surveillance, and testing of emerging zoonotic
      diseases. The research assistant will help with routine laboratory duties at
      the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) location in Columbus, OH. The
      incumbent will be expected to partake in any necessary training for the
      position and be eligible for renewal in the future. The HPAI related studies
      at PAAR also runs through AIEERP it is of high interest to collaborators
      and will likely continue throughout this year and into the next. This
      laboratory assistant will also be expected to help with responsibilities
      involving animal husbandry, sample collection, and downstream testing.
      This position will require frequent travel, unless the individual is based in
      Wooster, OH to fulfill responsibilities. This position will be temporary with
      the potential for renewal.
      Duties will include but not be limited to:
      - Routine laboratory tasks including: RT-PCR, ELISA, cell culture,
      neutralization assays, annual required trainings
      - The utilization of various skill including: basic laboratory acumen and
      safety, pipetting, aseptic technique, and animal husbandry
      - Working with large ruminants (dairy cows, calves), pigs, and potentially
      other animals
      - Following building, laboratory, and animal room SOPs for a BSL-3 Ag
      Facility
      - The ability to wear a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) and other
      necessary PPE for up to 4 hours at a time
      - Be able to lift up to 40 lbs
      - Utilization of various laboratory instruments and machines (pipettes, test
      tubes, syringes, BSC cabinets, centrifuges plate readers, PCR machines
      etc.)
      - Work with staff in AIEERP to create and implement schedules for others
      involved in studies
      - Travel up to 50% (dependent on PAAR study schedule)
      Additional Job Description
      Required Qualifications:
      • Projected completion or recent completion of bachelor’s degree in
      biology, animal science or related field
      • Previous experience with laboratory processes
      • Work with large animals
      • Ability to check standard FBI background check, including
      fingerprinting, as part of the Select Agent Division for processing
      Desired Qualifications:
      • Previous work experience at BSL-3, BSL-3 Ag, or BSL-3 + is a plus
      • Previous experience with assays related to biosurveillance,
      molecular biology of emerging infectious diseases (RT-PCR, Cell
      Culture, ELISA, etc.)
      • Enrollment and training in various aspects of biosafety, biosecurity
      • Previous work with handling, sampling large animals is strongly
      encouraged
