Job Summary
A key position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual in any field related to neuroethics to join the dynamic team at UBC. Under the direction of the Director of Neuroethics Canada, and Mend the Gap co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) Dr. Judy Illes, this Research Assistant will join a team of researchers devoted to neuroscience and biomedical ethics as part of a large research program focused on spinal cord repair, funded by the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Transformation Program. The position will be primarily dedicated to subprojects that examine the landscape of registered clinical trials for SCI. The goal is to deliver evidence that ensures the maximum beneficial translation of pre-clinical and clinical results in a just manner to people with SCI.

Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report upwards directly to the Director of Neuroethics Canada, Dr. Judy Illes, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr. Tanya Barretto. The Research Assistant will provide support and work alongside Faculty, fellow research associates and assistants, trainees, and administrator.

Work Performed

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

• Participate in the development and implementation of the research protocol and collection and analysis of data to characterize variables (e.g., inclusion and exclusion criteria, intervention type, post-trial follow-up activity, and quality) pertaining to registered SCI clinical trials.
• Assist with the development of a national survey to query priorities, concerns and perspectives of the SCI community related to the use of biomaterials in clinical trials.
• Attend, participate in, and as needed lead weekly laboratory meetings.
• Participate in and present at external meetings and conferences.
• Prepare reports, presentations, and publications.
• Interact with Canada-wide initiatives in brain and ethics.
• Perform other Neuroethics duties as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant is expected to perform professionally, make proper and sound decisions, and must be able to exercise judgment and tact when dealing with confidential study data. Errors in judgment could lead to lost productivity and missed deadlines. Inappropriate action in the handling of confidential matters could negatively reflect on Mend the Gap, Neuroethics Canada, and potentially the University of British Columbia.

Supervision Received

The Research Assistant’s work will be supported by the Director of Neuroethics Canada, Dr. Judy Illes (e.g., research guidance, professional mentorship). The Research Assistant will be supervised by Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Tanya Barretto, who will provide mentorship in all aspects of research (e.g., study design, methods evaluation, statistics, publication and presentation assistance).

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute in a discipline relevant to neuroethics: e.g., neuroscience, population and public health, health law, medical anthropology, medical sociology.
• Excellent academic credentials.
• Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodology and design.
• Computer proficiency.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational skills, oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
