- Clinical Healthcare Degree (BSN, RT, PT, OT, SLP)
- Bachelor’s Degree in clinical field
- 5+ Years clinical experience in acute care setting, including 1 year healthcare risk management experience
- None but CPPS and/or CPHRM within 12 m of hire
- Power point, Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, EPIC, RLDatix
- Advanced degree in healthcare, related field or JD
- 3 Years clinical risk management experience in acute care setting
- As required by degree. CPPS or CPHRM
- Advanced knowledge of healthcare practices, rules and regulations, COP, Medicare and Medicaid rules/Regs, PSQIA, HIPAA regulations and AR state and Federal laws/regulations.
In addition, the Clinical Risk Coordinator is responsible for keeping abreast of relevant issues that impact safety in healthcare setting and maintains awareness of regulatory activities related to clinical risk management. Demonstrates knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, CMS, TJC, Corporate Compliance, Ethics, EMTALA, as well as other applicable policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
The Clinical Risk Coordinator always preserves the confidentiality of patient protected information in compliance with HIPAA, Patient Safety Evaluation System, and Patient Safety Work Product.
The Clinical Risk position requires working with the Patient Safety and Relations Coordinators supporting the function to resolve complaints/issues before they evolve into liability claims, as well as assisting with lost and found system monitoring.
Risk Identification, Evaluation and Loss Control: Loss Prevention, Mitigation, Reduction and Project Management
Participate in system-wide policy review and development related to clinical risk and safety.
Collect, synthesize, and interpret data related to risk management and patient safety and prepare narrative reports.
Perform, oversee, and evaluate audits / reviews of risk issues to assess and monitor as needed.
Conduct medical record review and identify issues/concerns regarding potential claims/lawsuits.
Demonstrate strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills and a commitment to accurate and timely reporting, excellent follow through and responsiveness to staff inquiries regarding policies.
Participate in Ethics Consultations and Complex Case Reviews as needed.
Execute risk holds and adjustments (HB and PB) with the billing department in a timely manner.
Communicate post event/complaint investigatory findings to patients as appropriate and as instructed.
Engage in timely and professional communication with medical staff, nursing department, service line directors/managers, and front line staff regarding clinical risk issues.
Assist patients and families who have lost items during the course of hospitalization at UAMS Medical Center.
Answer phone, email, and in-person inquiries regarding lost items.
Accept found items from multiple sources and enter into the intra-departmental computerized tracking system.
Perform administrative functions required to ensure proper accounting and record keeping of all items received and distributed.
Utilize EPIC to review medical record and confirm accuracy of information entered into patient safety database regarding sentinel events.
Facilitate RCAs as directed.
Participate in adverse event case review by communicating medical record review findings verbally and through standard consultation with patient safety medical record review team, while utilizing judgment of urgent need meeting time constraints and expectations.
Participate in all RCAs involving sentinel events.
Participate in Adverse Events Committee review
Collaborate with stakeholders (units, departments, service lines, and committees) to establish robust action plans following adverse or sentinel events.
Problem solve with medical staff and appropriate departments when risk and safety issues arise.
Utilize customer service orientation skills and manage communication effectively with various levels of hospital personnel and outside customers.
Provide ongoing education to all UAMS employees regarding use of the patient safety event
reporting system, patient safety topics, and culture of safety.
Assist as assigned in presenting educational programs that promote HPI high reliability
efforts and enhance organizational culture of safety aligning with institutional message
creating momentum for change.
Work with Department of Patient Safety team members to create educational materials illustrating HPI error prevention tools, assist with Website build, and patient safety coach training.
Performs other duties as needed.

The Clinical Risk Coordinator works with the Director to develop and execute the Risk Management Plan with the primary aim being to protect patients, staff members, and visitors from inadvertent injury by providing an ongoing, comprehensive, and systematic approach to reducing risk exposures to improve quality of care and mitigate financial loss.
