      This position works out of our Ottawa, Ontario location in the Point of Care, Diagnostics division. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.

      Our Point of Care diagnostic portfolio spans key health and therapeutic areas, including infectious disease, cardiometabolic, informatics and toxicology.

      Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

      The Opportunity

      The successful candidate for this position will work as a member of the Chemistry Engineering Support Team and play a key role in improving manufacturing process capability by working with product, quality, and test engineers to identify and address sources of variability coming from chemistry solutions in sensor performance.

      What You’ll Do

      • Monitoring chemistry’s critical process parameters, critical-to-quality attributes, process, and solution yields.

      • Lead and/or participate in investigations and root cause analysis to identify chemistry sources of variability impacting product performance.

      • Investigations into non-conformances and documentation of findings and Corrective/ Preventative Actions in Quality Reports.

      • Identification, development, and implementation of chemistry improvements.

      • Gather and analyze data, create, and execute experimental and verification strategies to develop and demonstrate high process capability and product performance.

      • Manage documentation updates through the Design Control System by drafting document updates and driving approvals in the electronic document system; consistently apply Quality Systems requirements and procedures.

      • Independently execute assigned tasks by applying standard engineering/chemistry theories, concepts, and techniques.

      • Understand and comply with Quality and EH&S policies, procedures, and guidelines. Safeguard the environment and facilitate a safe and healthy workplace culture.

      • Consistently apply Quality Systems requirements and procedures.

      • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with planning, operators, equipment technologists and group members of related areas and managers.

      Required Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.

      • Two plus years related work experience in an engineering/scientist role.

      • Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

      • Ability to design experiments, analyze and interpret data and document.

      • Analytical skills, creativity and innovative approach to problem solving.

      • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members and to work independently.

      • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; able to deal effectively with people on all organizational levels and work in a team environment across departments.

      • Willingness to work in labs, manufacturing areas, and office environments.

      • Very strong investigational skills, drive to understand and solve problems.

      • Resourcefulness, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

      • Familiarity with any of the following is an asset: analytical chemistry, chemistry techniques and equipment, process engineering, root cause analysis, statistics, and statistical software packages such as Minitab and SAS JMP, ISO/FDA regulations, risk management/FMEA methods, GMP and LEAN Six Sigma manufacturing principles.
