      DUTIES

      Security Officer Trainees participate in a comprehensive training program and receive intensive on-the-job instruction to learn general knowledge, procedures, and practices to patrol and safeguard City-owned buildings, parks, reservoirs, facilities, grounds, and equipment. This work involves answering questions and directing visitors/patrons; assuring that only authorized persons enter buildings, yards, and other restricted areas; preparing reports and keeping records, making preliminary investigations of accidents, thefts, and disturbances; issuing warnings or citations for illegal parking; testifying in court; and under the close supervision and presence of other security personnel, providing assistance in the patrol of assigned patrol routes, safeguarding of cashier’s windows/areas, and detainment of violators pending the arrival of a peace officer, and related work. Employees receive evaluations periodically as the training progresses to ensure performance milestones are met and critical competencies are assessed. These are intended to develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to qualify for transition to the Security Officer Assistant class.

      NOTES :

      Security Officer Trainees are appointed to positions which are designated as temporary training positions in accordance with Section 5.30 of the Rules of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners. Employment as a Security Officer Trainee is limited to one (1) year on-the-job training.

      Upon successful completion of the on-the-job training program and receipt of a letter of recommendation from an employing City department, incumbents will receive an appointment to Security Officer Assistant and begin a six-month probationary period. New appointees who do not successfully complete the temporary training period will be terminated from the class.

      The Security Officer Trainee class will be utilized for the duration of the Bridge-to-Jobs Program solely as a pathway for Bridge-to-Jobs Program participants to eventually transition to full-time regular appointment as a Security Officer
      1. Current placement in the Bridge-to-Jobs candidate pool with the City of Los Angeles; and
      2. A letter of recommendation from the personnel office of the employing City department, which includes a statement on the department’s willingness to hire the employee as a Security Officer Trainee. The letter must be attached to the application at the time of filing.

      PROCESS NOTES

      1. Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).
      2. A High School diploma or equivalent is highly desired.
      3. Candidates will be asked to complete and submit a Personal History Statement (PHS) on-line at a later date. Certification by a Department is subject to a candidate’s completion of the PHS. Any candidate who does not submit this information by the specified date will be ineligible for certification at that time. The information provided in your PHS will be used during the Background Investigation.
      4. Prior to appointment, a thorough and comprehensive Background Investigation will be conducted. You must not have a history of criminal or improper conduct including any felony convictions. You must not have poor employment, military, or driving records, which would affect your suitability for security work. You must have a responsible financial history. You must have displayed a pattern of respect and honesty in your dealings with individuals and organizations. You must be fingerprinted and have no disqualifying record of law violations or other improper conduct. Potentially disqualifying violations or conduct includes convictions for more than one minor offense within the past year.
      5. Candidates may be required to undergo a DRUG and ALCOHOL screening test based on City policy.
      6. Appointments to the class of Security Officer Trainee, Class Code 3313, will be made to temporary training positions in accordance with Section 5.30 of the Rules of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners for a maximum duration of five years. New appointees who do not successfully complete the temporary training period will be terminated from the class.

      The examination will consist entirely of review of candidates' City employment application by Personnel Department staff to ensure that minimum requirements are met. Since these reviews will be made solely on the basis of the written information contained on the candidate's City employment application, it is each candidate's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete with accurate descriptions of relevant experience.

      Individuals appointed to the class of Security Officer Trainee will receive on-the-job training to assist them with developing the critical competencies required for successful performance in the targeted, regular civil service classification of Security Officer.       NOTES :

      1. This examination is based on a validation study.
      2. Based on City policy, before being hired into one of these positions, you may be required to undergo a drug and alcohol screening test.
      3. Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22 and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
      7. In accordance with Los Angeles City Ordinance 187134, candidates must meet the minimum requirement of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or receive an exemption and report their vaccination status prior to appointment by the hiring authority.       Notice :
