      Job Title: Senior Design Engineer

      Salary: £50,500 - £55,000 (Depending on Experience)

      Term: 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

      Location: Peterborough

      Benefits: 25 days annual leave,

      At the Peterborough facility, we are responsible for the engineering development, marketing, sales and manufacturing of Cat and Perkins industrial engines up to 7 litres, for use in a wide variety of machines.       The Position:

      We are currently seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team. This role will be focused on design solutions to address challenging requirements, either within New Product Introduction or updates to existing platforms for a variety of Caterpillar and 3rd Party applications. The successful candidate will serve as an experienced contributor on assignments that are complex in nature, working with individuals and teams across global Manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers.

      Job Responsibilities and Duties:

      As a Senior Design Engineer in the team, you will be expected to have a mix of design and development experience, knowledge of IC engines and be able to lead, plan and execute challenging tasks/projects with minimal supervision.

      • Design and packaging of a variety of core engine components:

        • Major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain and in-cylinder components.

        • Components related to breather, cooling & lubrication systems

        • FEAD systems

      • Working in a multi-disciplined team to ensure solutions meet customer, durability and functional requirements

      • Developing solutions for complex issues arising from the Quality and Manufacturing environments

      • Developing strong relationships with suppliers to ensure design solutions are aligned to high quality and cost expectations

      • Take the lead on major projects and spend up to 20% of your time coaching less experienced Engineers in technical aspects or support on task delivery

      • Taking the lead or supporting FMEA on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs

      • Conduct or generate reports to support component and system design reviews

      • Maintain communication to peers, team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities

      • Development of drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical data to support the release of parts for prototype and volume production.

      • Support field and production issues, determine root cause, put in place containment actions, and develop permanent corrective actions. Work with suppliers and keep stakeholder informed of progress and decisions

      Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:

      • Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued

      • Knowledge of Core Engine systems such as Rotating Systems, Valvetrain, Castings, Lubrication, Breather and Cooling systems

      • Good understanding of Component Manufacturing principles & processes

      • Good understanding of Manufacturing Assembly principles

      • Design knowledge of engine & mechanical components and systems

      • Self-motivation and an ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.

      • Excellent communications skills & Teamwork

      • To collaborate & manage interactions on behalf of Caterpillar with external suppliers to develop design solutions.

      Desirable skills and knowledge include:

      • Experience of running and participating in FMEA

      • Modelling & Detailing experience in CREO4

      • Ability to use CREO Simulate

      • Experience in component and engine validation & verification

      • Bolted joint and sealing experience

      • Design experience gained in the off-highway diesel or machine sector

      • Experience in CO2 enabling technologies within core engine systems such as valvetrain pumps and friction reducing technology.

      • Knowledge and usage of Team Centre – data management software

      • New design development following the APQP methodology

      • Familiarity with Microsoft O365 including Teams
