      Role Summary:

      As the AVP, Labor & Employment Counsel at Saks you will provide expert legal counsel on labor and employment-related matters, ensuring that Saks operates within the bounds of the law while fostering a positive work environment.

      Key Qualifications:

      • JD from an ABA accredited institution

      • License to practice law in New York

      • 8+ years of hands-on experience practicing Employment Law; preferably in-house

      • Knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws and regulations (including ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, etc.)

      • Ability to present complex issues in a clear and concise manner and provide succinct results-oriented legal advice for Senior Management Team members

      • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.

      • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

      • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and manage external legal partners.

      • Familiarity with e-commerce or retail industry challenges is a plus.

      Role Description:

      • Legal Counseling: Advise business stakeholders (such as the People team or Senior Management Team) on a wide range of labor and employment issues, such as hiring practices, wage and hour matters, employee relations, performance management, and terminations.

      • Litigation Management: Handle labor and employment litigation, including managing outside counsel and interacting with government agencies. This includes oversight on internal investigations, drafting position statements, responding to information requests and attending mediations.

      • Policy Development and Implementation : In partnership with the People team, provide legal expertise and guidance on the development and refinement of company policies, training and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment laws.

      • Dispute Resolution: Address employee grievances in partnership with the People team, mediate disputes, and advise on potential legal risks.

      • Contract Management : Review and negotiate employment-related contracts, such as employment agreements, severance packages, and non-compete agreements.

      • Stay Updated: Monitor and analyze changes in laws, regulations, and trends affecting labor and employment, adapting company policies as necessary.
