      Senior Nursing Director - Procedural / Full Time

      GENERAL OVERVIEW

      Brigham and Women's and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is seeking a Senior Nursing Director, an outstanding leader, to lead all aspects of our Procedural Services.

      As the nursing leader of the Procedural Services, the role reports to the Vice President of Peri-Procedural Services for operations, the Chief Nurse/VP Patient Care Services and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer/VP of Nursing for practice professional standards, quality, and safety. With 24 hour accountability the Senior Nurse Director (SND) in collaboration with other service, team, and departmental colleagues, assures that proficient, compassionate patient care is consistently provided for patients and families in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings within the services. The Individual participates in the development, refinement, communication and actualization of the hospital’s Procedural Services vision, professional practice model, and relationship-based care delivery system. The SND is responsible for nursing practice, quality measurement and improvement, education and professional development, clinical information systems, fiscal oversight/planning and human resources related matters, patient care within the division of procedural services, leadership development, and strategic planning under the mentorship and direction of the Vice President of Peri-Procedural Services, the CNO/ VP Patient Care Services and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer/VP of Nursing.

      Principal Duties and Responsibilities

      Emulates leadership principles and Department of Nursing voice represented by the Professional Practice Model (PPM): Compassion, Knowledge, Excellence, Collaboration and Relationship-based care with care of the patient, family, team, and nurse.

      A. Compassion

      1. Establishes and maintains an environment that is encouraging of professional nursing practice.
      2. Serves as a clinical leader/coach/mentor to nurse leaders within the services/departments.
      3. Attracts, retains, and develops the most promising leadership team.
      4. Identifies, encourages, and provides mechanisms for leader and staff participation through collaborative governance.
      5. Provides leadership to nursing and clinical leadership staff in the selection, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.
      6. Participates in development, implementation, and monitoring of performance standards and performance management systems to assure continuous improvement on the quality of service and care.

      B. Knowledge

      1. Participates in formulating the department's, Patient Care Services and the organization's vision and strategic plan.
      2. Communicates and operationalizes the strategic plan and can link the plan to tangible outcomes.
      3. Uses management information to determine trends, forecasts, and marketing strategies, which have implication for the institution's operational and strategic direction.
      4. Develops and maintains an operational plan based on the Hospital and DON mission, strategies, and budget.
      5. Develops and participates in creating systems to monitor the patient care environment, knowledgeable about and mindful of relevant regulatory compliance. Including environment of care plan to ensure a safe, infection-free and efficient area for patients, visitors, and employees.
      6. Assures regulatory compliance through leader and staff education and participation in continual readiness initiatives/ programs.
      7. Assures development and implementation of educational and professional development programs, which meet the needs of leaders and staff.
      8. Provides leadership support for and participates in the development of nursing and other clinical research programs.
      9. Applies research findings in developing practice standards and guidelines.

      C. Excellence

      1. Demonstrates and promotes a professional practice environment that recognizes excellence in clinical nursing practice; participatory decision making around practice issues and the work environment; research and theory-based practice; care delivery systems and human resource development and management.
      2. Provides input into development and implementation of information systems to support patient care.
      3. Provides formal and informal opportunities for feedback regarding professional development to leaders and staff and to develop personal professional development goals.
      4. Accountable for contributions to planning, implementing and evaluating the Department of Nursing Quality Plan, inclusive of nurse sensitive indicators and patient satisfaction metrics.
      5. Supports and emulates an environment focused on quality and safety with a just culture. Participates in review process and improvement measures.
      6. Actively participates in Brigham and Women’s Hospital quality improvement programs, assuring clear articulation of the quality agenda by all staff in their patient care area(s) and/or specialty patient populations.
      7. Develops, revises, or reviews all policies and procedures related to service area. Has intimate knowledge of policies and procedures and monitors staff compliance.
      8. Operationalizes human resource policies to include behavioral interviewing, credentials compliance, orienting, evaluating, coaching/counseling, disciplining, and terminating staff.
      9. Organizes and directs workflow, solves intra and interdepartmental problems that inhibit workflow and quality, motivates employees to optimal performance, and serves as a resource to staff for clinical, ethical, or system issues.

      D. Collaboration

      1. Represents the team of nursing with senior management, department administrators, and medical leadership.
      2. Actively builds inter-professional relationships to assure dialogue around patient care and issues to enhance outcome driven patient care.
      3. Participates in and collaborates with the Nurse Executive Board.
      4. Seeks resources/serves as a liaison for nurse leaders within the designated departments/division.
      5. Collaborates with Human Resource leaders/staff re: personnel management as appropriate.
      6. Collaborates in division wide recruitment and retention strategies and planning.
      7. Represents Department of Nursing and provides leadership on various hospital and nursing committees.
      8. Collaborates with colleagues in nursing and other teams on clinical research studies.

      E. Relationship Based Care

      1. Creates an environment that celebrates the professional growth of nursing practice.
      2. Responsible for creating and maintaining a caring, therapeutic, healing, patient- and family-centered care environment.
      3. Assures the presence of interventions to promote/assure a patient and family centered healing environment.
      4. Assures appropriate staffing plans and budget to meet patient care needs on a continuous basis.
      5. Promotes an inclusive environment supportive of a patient- and family- centered care for a diverse community.

      F. Financial Planning and Management

      1. Determines resources that are needed to meet patient care and quality of work-life goals in collaboration with clinical and administrative leadership team.
      2. Collaborates with inter-professional team in developing financial plans for new and existing programs.
      3. Provides leadership to clinical and nursing management staff in the development and management of capital and operational budgets.
      4. Allocates and monitors resources to achieve productivity, customer service and staff development goals.
      5. Participates in determining and managing nursing resource requirements and plays an active role in recruitment, retention, and development of programs that meet these requirements.

      Qualifications

      • Current registration in nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
      • MSN (or) DNP (or) PhD, (or) a BSN with a Master’s degree in a related field, required.
      • Current certification required. Certification must be maintained while employed in this position.
      • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in nursing administration within an academic medical center (preferred).
      • Experience in leading and providing care in a procedural space preferred.

      Skills and Abilities Required

      • Must have demonstrated ability in management of diverse activities pertaining to patient care service line or clinical competence in nursing practice.
      • Expert interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to organize, to supervise and to evaluate the work of others; to develop and to administer policies, procedures, budgets, and apply current concepts of nursing practice.

      Supervisory Responsibilities: Position may include supervision of nursing directors, assistant nursing directors, nurse/flow/operations managers, professional development managers, and other levels and roles of technical and support personnel.

      Accountability: Reports to the Vice President of Peri-Procedural Services for operations and strategy and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer/VP of Nursing for quality and professional development.

      Working Conditions: Works in a variety of patient care environments throughout the institution. Will require visits to patient care units and to community agencies. This includes travel to off campus locations such as Chestnut Hill, Foxborough, and other current and future BWH licensed and/or affiliated practices with procedural service offerings.
