      Job Summary

      The City Planning Division is hiring Senior Planners, Urban Design to engage in city wide and area specific urban design guidelines and planning studies, coordinate urban design development review and to contribute to the implementation of large, complex projects.       Major Responsibilities:

      Reporting to the Urban Design Program Manager in the District, the Senior Planner, Urban Design has the primary responsibility of developing and implementing complex urban design built form and public realm policies and guidelines, undertaking built form, public realm and open space analysis, and leading in urban design review for development. In addressing these responsibilities the individual will be required to:

      • Conduct complex planning studies, policy analysis and/or research, including the coordination of staff and consultant teams to support the preparation and evaluation of urban design policy, research and analysis and urban design guidelines;
      • Consult with interested parties and negotiate with interested stakeholders to produce superior urban design solutions;
      • Coordinate built form and public realm policy work with the existing or planned context;
      • Provide Urban Design review and input for policy initiatives and development proposals; Initiate, develop and recommend innovative urban design approaches to guide and better integrate with the physical environment;
      • Coordinate urban design input, identify and analyze problems / opportunities in the public realm, and develop and implement design proposals and solutions;
      • Develop innovative solutions to urban design challenges and inform colleagues, elected officials, stakeholders and the public through reports, presentations and other appropriate means;
      • Prepare reports and a broad range of presentation materials for consideration by City Council and its Standing Committees, the community and various stakeholders;
      • Provide professional advice and support to the Division as a participant in and team lead of corporate initiatives and in intergovernmental relations;
      • Prepare, coordinate and/or review requests for qualifications/proposals, terms of reference and study designs to support planning, research and policy studies;
      • Coordinate and administer consultants’ studies, including leading both the overall and daytoday scope of work and ensure the successful completion of required deliverables; Carry out special Urban Design tasks as assigned, including leading training activities and mentoring staff; and
      • Prepare for, and act as an expert witness before, the Ontario Land Tribunal.

      Key Qualifications:

      Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

      1. University degree in architecture, landscape architecture or a related design discipline.
      2. Extensive experience leading complex urban design projects from conception to completion and working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
      3. Extensive experience in municipal urban design and public realm master plans.
      4. Extensive experience developing and implementing complex urban design and public realm plans, policies, guidelines and other implementing tools.
      5. Extensive experience undertaking community engagement and consultation.

      You must also have:

      • Highly developed technical, analytical, design, graphic, verbal and written communication skills relating to urban design matters.
      • Ability to work well and lead in a team environment.
      • Ability to balance political, community and other stakeholder interests in the development and design of projects.
      • Strong interpersonal skills to consult, engage and negotiate with the community, City Divisions, public and private agencies, developers, and their consultants.
      • Ability to work on assignments/projects demanding critical judgement and analytical thinking. Ability to use design industry standard software applications such as: MicroStation, AutoCAD, SketchUp and Adobe (Illustrator and Photoshop).
      • Ability to develop and maintain solid internal and external relationships.
      • Highly developed presentation and communication skills to communicate effectively verbally, graphically and in writing at all levels of the organization and with elected officials, and the public.
      • Comprehensive understanding of the built form, parcel and block challenges and opportunities on large complex sites.
      • Ability to travel to various work sites across the City.
      • Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all relevant regulations that apply to the job duties.
      • Membership or eligibility for membership in the Ontario Association of Architects or Ontario Association of Landscape Architects or related equivalent.
