Bachelor’s degree; Master's degree preferred.
At least ten years of relevant experience with a focus on advocacy, organizing, leadership development, and advocacy MERL across diverse contexts; public narrative and community organizing experience preferred;
Exceptional communication skills, including facilitation and coaching experience, the ability to communicate complex information in a simple, concise manner, and champion change across a matrixed organization;
Demonstrated experience with coaching leaders and teams for strategic results;
Experience developing and implementing an effective advocacy strategy;
Understanding of trends and evolving priorities in global development and foreign aid;
Experience collaborating with survivor leaders preferred.
Ability to synthesize research data, trends, and stories to distill and socialize learning;
Strategic planning.

The Need
For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Senior Specialist, Advocacy.
The Senior Specialist, Advocacy is responsible for the leading internal capacity building on the advocacy dimension of IJM’s protection model across all IJM project locations. The Senior Specialist, Advocacy will provide coaching and strategic guidance to project teams and will lead efforts to identify , evaluate, scale up, replicate, and secure buy-in for successful advocacy interventions. The Senior Specialist will collaborate with IJM’s global staff and GSN leaders to accelerate protection at scale by strengthening linkages between advocacy with other dimensions of the model.
This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Global Vice President, Advocacy & Survivor Leadership and is only available for candidates with the right to work in the US .
Responsibi lities
Leadership and Management:
1. Provide strategic leadership on global advocacy, ensuring advocacy goals and strategies are aligned with overall protection goals.
2. Lead global advocacy Community of Practice to drive strategy and facilitate cross-regional learning.
Strategy & Knowledge Development & Implementation:
1. Serve as subject matter expert on advocacy and provide coaching to project-level colleagues and partners on recommended advocacy strategies to move host governments to transform justice systems.
2. Provide consulting for project teams on strategies and interventions to link advocacy with other dimensions of the Protection Model.
3. Provide coaching to project teams on IJM’s advocacy evaluation methodology and contribute to bi-annual Activation Synthesis Report, elevating successes and challenges from project teams’ quarterly reporting.
4. Identify and share scalable interventions and case studies across project teams, ensure promising interventions are evaluated, and communicate insights across the organization to drive behavior change.
Networking & Partnership:
1. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to build a body of knowledge on advocacy and organizing strategies across diverse geographic and political contexts.
Training and Development:
1. Provide facilitation and coaching to project teams on designing advocacy and organizing strategies that accelerate protection.
2. Create and refine organizational resources that equip teams to replicate and scale successful interventions on advocacy.
Research, Program Management and M&E:
1. Provide coaching to IJM project teams with implementing an evaluation plan on interventions that have been elevated to the Intervention Pipeline, and support project teams with replicating and scaling successful interventions.
2. Secure organizational buy-in for tested interventions on advocacy and lead strategies to secure external endorsement from strategic partners/venues, including public engagement.
3. Provide internal coaching on implementation of IJM’s advocacy evaluation methodology so teams are well positioned to report on global advocacy KPIs and to build their advocacy evaluation muscle.
