      Established in 1982 by our Chairman, Joseph Gallagher, JGL has evolved into the largest and leading subcontractor for tunnelling in the United Kingdom. Our construction capabilities range from traditional hand tunnelling techniques to innovative methods employed in large-scale projects like Crossrail and Themes Tideway. In addition to underground construction, JGL has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality above ground structures for residential developments, specialising in low to high rise concrete frames.

      To continue our legacy and ensure a consistent supply of quality tunnelling and construction methodologies to our clients, JGL is establishing a new in-house design team. As part of this initiative, we are currently seeking a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer to support our Design and Build construction projects across the business.

      Role Summary:

      In this role, you will provide technical support to various sectors of our business, including above ground structures and tunnelling teams. You will also assist the tendering team in developing construction methodologies and lead projects through the preconstruction design phase, producing designs, and offering technical support during the construction phase to assist the site teams.

      Key responsibilities include:

      • Producing high-quality designs and CAD drawings while coordinating with the design team.
      • Assisting in the development and mentoring of the design team to encourage dynamic and ad-hoc design solutions.
      • Applying Temporary Works design principles according to the BS5975 standard and also applying permanent work standards using timber, steel, reinforced concrete, and proprietary structural systems.
      • Typical applications of design will include shaft design, timber headings, microtunnelling/pipejacking, excavation stability and support, earthwork stability, concrete formwork, crane platforms, and ground settlement analysis.
      • Working in a multicultural environment that fosters growth and is recognised as a center of excellence for quality constructible design.


      To be successful in this role, you should meet the following criteria:

      • Master's level degree in Civil and Structural Engineering (consideration may be given to Geotechnical and Mining backgrounds).
      • Chartered or near-chartered with a recognised institution, such as ICE or IStructE (not essential).
      • 5 to 10 years of experience with expertise in underground structures/tunnelling temporary works, preferably within a design consultancy environment.
      • Strong technical skills with accomplished structural design abilities and a solid geotechnical foundation.
      • Leadership capabilities with the ability to support, mentor, and develop junior engineers.
      • Solid understanding of health and safety regulations, design risk assessment processes in line with CDM H&S regulations.
      • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with the team and external clients.

      Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to):

      • Demonstrating leadership by managing and mentoring a team of engineers and technicians while assisting with their professional development.
      • Managing projects within tight schedules.
      • Ensuring designs adhere to industry standards, codes, and are checked and approved following company quality procedures.
      • Coordinating with external consultants and third-party checkers.
      • Liaising with clients and project construction teams.
      • Contributing to the success of the business through business development activities and assisting with tenders when required.
