SHERIFF FACILITIES MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST I
This position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:
Effective June 28, 2024 – 4.25% increase
Effective June 27, 2025 – 4.00% increase
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list. The current vacancies are in the Training Division/Tustin Academy and James A. Musick Facility. The list can be used to fill current and future Sheriff Facilities Maintenance Specialist I positions. The eligible list established may also be used to fill similar and/or lower level classifications.

Together, these Commands and Divisions provide services including land, air and sea-based patrol, custody operations, investigative services, emergency management, coroner services, forensics and specialty operations, among an extensive list of other public safety services.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Sheriff Facilities Maintenance Specialist I identifies building maintenance needs and coordinates work with Sheriff Facilities Operations for tasks that require journey-level skills and/or conformance to codes. Oversees and trains inmate work crews in the maintenance and repair of property, furniture, equipment and grounds at Sheriff-Coroner Department buildings and facilities. The incumbent must be able to foresee, troubleshoot and perform repairs in compliance with local codes and department regulations and write out requisitions for supplies, parts and equipment. In addition, supervises inmates reclaiming lead and spent cartridges and maintaining and repairing targets and baffles at firing range facilities; maintains inventory control of ammunition, powder and related materials; reorders supplies as required, Mobile Range disassembly, transportation and setup at various county locations. The Sheriff Facilities Maintenance Specialist I utilizes inmate work crews for duties at various divisions and would be responsible for the supervision of the inmate work crew.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of basic safety requirements, tools and materials needed to maintain and repair the facility as needed. In addition the ideal candidate will have good communication skills; ability to operate hand tools, small mechanical equipment, computer keyboard, and operate a truck with lift gate; ability to operate a forklift and pallet jack.

License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher is required by date of appointment.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must have no felony convictions or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, fingerprinting and may include a polygraph test. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e. degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Services (N.A.C.E.S.).
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Environmental Conditions: Incumbents may be required to work inside of a jail facility with inmates that may become hostile; work outside or drive in inclement weather conditions. Other assignments may require crawling through attics and confined spaces.
Physical Requirements: Incumbents must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; be confined to small space; climb ladders, scaffolding and poles; independent body mobility to stand, walk, crawl, stoop, bend, pull, or push; identify and distinguish colors; operate power tools or other machinery that may be potentially hazardous; pass an initial asbestos physical examination and subsequent periodic examination in order to be issued and utilize a respirator; and manual dexterity to operate drills, light mechanical equipment and computer keyboard; and operate a truck with lift gate, fork lift, pallet jack, etc.
SELECTION PROCESS
Sheriff Human Resources screens all applications to identify the most qualified candidates for the position based on the skills required to meet the needs of the County. After the initial screening, the qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the competition.

Structured Oral Interview | Oral Exam (Weighted 100%):
A panel of job knowledge experts will interview and evaluate each candidate's responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job. This is a competitive process; therefore, candidate responses to the structured questions should be thorough, detailed, and complete. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
Based on the Department's needs the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
ELIGIBLE LIST
After all procedures have been completed, Sheriff Human Resources will establish an eligible list of qualified candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
