      Staff Engineer - Fluidic Systems

      Job Description

      The Staff Fluidics System design engineer is part of the Illumina product development team creating new industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets. You will work in a very interdisciplinary team environment to develop industry-leading genetic analysis instrumentation and device products.

      Primary responsibilities of this position include fluidic and microfluidics systems architecture, component design and implementation, metrology development, reliability test, systems integration, and supplier management in both integrated consumables and instruments utilizing novel reagents, chemistry, and recipes. This candidate should be highly motivated to work cross-functionally in the ecosystem of fluidics, optics, precision motion, electronics, and biochemistry, and embrace role changes throughout the whole product development process from early conceptualization to commercialization and manufacturing transfer.

      Responsibilities:

      • Contribute to fluid systems architecture design and down selection to meet system-level requirements and specifications.
      • Lead design and customization of critical fluid components and sub-assemblies include pumps, valves, sensors, manifolds, flexible elements, fluid interfaces and routing, etc. to meet the functional, cost, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and safety requirements
      • Drive critical parameter management and design FMEA process to achieve high robustness, reliability, and lifetime performance of fluid systems.
      • Design and implement testbeds and metrology fixtures for component-level and system-level characterization, diagnostic, and reliability/life testing.
      • Contribute to the selection and qualification of critical suppliers/partners for both fast prototyping and volume manufacturing.
      • Lead quality control workflows with critical suppliers to minimize supply quality issues in production.
      • Contribute to fluid systems integration, functional test, and recipe development through the collaboration with cross-functional teams.

      Education and Experience:

      • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Systems Engineering or related field with 3+ years of industry experience in fluid systems design with a full product development cycle from conceptualization to volume manufacturing, or…
      • BS or MS with 8+ years industry experience

      Requirements:

      • Proficiency in the design and implementation of innovative fluid components, microfluidic designs, and sub-assemblies for commercial products with 3D CAD programs (e.g., SolidWorks), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., COMSOL), and testbed automation software (e.g., LabView, Python)
      • Strong understanding of fluid mechanics. Conduct first-principle and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses to characterize fluid flows to guide design optimization and tradeoffs.
      • Good understanding of critical parameter management workflow and design FMEA process
      • Experience in characterization and testing of fluid components and systems, including design of experiments and root cause analysis
      • Experience in reliability test design and protocol with strong statistical analysis skills for data interpretation and visualization
      • Experience in supplier management with schedule and budget tracking, familiar with the process of SOW, RFP, and RFQ
      • Excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills
      • Experience in development of biomedical instrument or device is a plus

      The estimated base salary range for the Staff Engineer - Fluidic Systems role based in the United States of America is: $113,600 - $170,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
