      Market Director for North Market:

      - 12 Regions

      - 28 Sites

      Brief description: The Manager, State & Local Government Relations, will help guide the development, socialization and execution of a comprehensive, long-term state and local government relations strategy to promote and protect Sysco’s public policy interests in a designated market. Working closely with the Director of Government Relations, functional and commercial leaders, the market GR Manager will lead the company’s advocacy efforts and build relationships with elected and appointed officials, trade associations, NGOs and corporations across the respective Market states aimed at achieving public policy outcomes favorable the company’s business objectives.

      Description of Responsibilities:

      Strategic Issues Advocacy

      • Assess and prioritize short- and long-term risks and impacts of state and local government actions on Sysco’s business interests.
      • Identify opportunities to remove legislative or regulatory barriers to growth.
      • Evaluate capabilities of all trade association assets, contract lobbyists and affiliate groups to manage issues strategically and effectively.
      • Help develop and execute an advocacy engagement plan to eliminate or mitigate highest risk issues; seize opportunities to support the business directly; and manage an effective network of state and local allies to proactively identify future threats and opportunities.
      • Represent Sysco before state agencies, legislators and other state and local officials across the assigned market states.

      Relationship Building

      • Participate in meetings of state and local government officials and manage Sysco engagement in these meetings that advances our public policy priorities.
      • Help determine and execute an effective political (PAC) strategy to support relationship building efforts with public officials in the region that advance our mission and are compliant with state election laws.
      • Help manage official engagement with executive and legislative branches (e.g. host facility tours, attend in-district events) within the market.
      • Working cooperatively with Regional Site leaders, devise and execute a plan to leverage state and local association relationships to promote and protect Sysco’s business interests.

      Branding and Reputation Management

      • Improve knowledge of Sysco’s commitments and corporate social responsibility priorities - e.g. economic impact, environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, charitable giving - among public policy leaders.
      • Incorporate involvement of public policy leaders in existing corporate engagement activities - e.g. distribution center opening events, local market public relations, employee milestones.

      PAC Administration & Lobbying Compliance

      • Maintain the Sysco PAC database and manage tasks such as check approval and cutting processes; bank reconciliations; federal and state compliance reports; Sysco PAC website content upkeep.
      • Support planning and organization of PAC events.
      • Support PAC solicitations, PAC presentations and PAC Board preparation.
      • Prepare state lobbying reports and ensure compliance with all state reporting requirements.

      Educational Requirements:

      • Bachelor’s degree (Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Communications, English or Journalism preferred).

      Experience and Skills:

      Position-Specific

      • Minimum 5 years of market-specific legislative or political experience for a state lawmaker or governor, major corporation, trade association, NGO or government agency
      • Knowledge of the U.S. foodservice distribution business and/or related industries, such as restaurants or food manufacturing and processing
      • Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes at the state and local levels
      • Strong analytical, communication and organizational skills
