The Office of Research and Development is seeking a full-time Statistician (Health) to work remotely for the Research & Development service of the VA Boston Healthcare System.
This is a temporary position in the Excepted service, not to exceed December 30, 2027.Duties

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/21/2024.
To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following basic requirements:
A. Degree that included fifteen (15) semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics andstatistics, provided at least six (6) semester hours were in statistics), and nine (9) additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine,education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics,social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, healthsociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements will be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
AND
In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, the following experience is required:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is experience applying biostatistics methods inresearch data analysis; using statistical computer software packages (e.g., SAS, R, S Plus, PASS, NQuery, StatXact, and EAST; Visual Basic, Perl, and Matlab); participating in study design for clinical or health services research trials; and performing data collection, management and analysis.
AND
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (SPF). An SPF is a skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job. Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position, beyond the basic education and specialized experience requirements. Applicants who do not meet the SPF below are ineligible for further consideration.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience using matrix math tools (e.g.,SAS PROC IML or R MATRIX) to set up simulations for power and sample size estimations.
NOTE: Your description of your work experience(s) in your resume must demonstrate the required specialized experience and SPF.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. However, the work does require theability to travel. Travel can occasionally be frequent depending on studies and timing of events.Eff ective oral and written communication are essential to present (a) protocols for scientificreview (b) study procedures and updates at study related meetings, (c) scientific results, (e) facilitate and lead study team meetings and (f) participate in Cooperative Studies Program (CSP)management, general staff meetings, and quality management meetings and quality audits.
