      The Opportunity

      The Alberta Geological Survey branch (AGS) of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) provides geological information and advice about the geology of Alberta to the Government of Alberta, the AER, industry, and the public to support the exploration, sustainable development, regulation, and conservation of Alberta's resources.

      The Student, Subsurface Geology will collaborate with other geoscientists to advance our understanding of Alberta’s subsurface by leveraging existing data from AER and AGS holdings. This role offers immersion into an integrated multi-disciplinary team and will provide the successful candidate with exposure to varied geoscience specialties including stratigraphy, sedimentology, petrophysics, resource characterization, geophysics, and seismology.

      What your day-to-day will look like :

      • Assist geoscientists on staff with local and regional geological mapping of subsurface units in support of current AER and AGS projects. Collect and analyze data from multiple sources to help create frameworks that address regulatory, environmental, and economic issues that face Alberta.

      • Evaluate formations for their potential as targets for production, storage, or disposal. Integrate multiple datasets to create models, maps, and summary reports for internal use.

      • Accompany staff to the Core Research Centre and log core using WellCAD to create a detailed account of the core properties. Create facies models that can be used to map sedimentological and stratigraphic changes that occur along strike and down dip.

      • Accompany staff to remote field locations to map and log outcrops in support of current subsurface mapping projects.

      • Participate in meetings, reviews and other discussions as required.

      What we’re looking for in you:

      • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Geoscience and is returning to the program following the work term.

      • Familiarity with subsurface geological datasets and basic geological principles.

      • Strong knowledge of Alberta’s subsurface stratigraphy.

      • Proficient with using Accumap, Kingdom, or alternative software for subsurface mapping.

      • Core logging and field experience will be considered an asset.

      • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

      Additional Information:

      • This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.

      • Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

      • Standard First Aid/H2S Alive is considered an asset. Training provided as required.

      • Pre-placement Medical required.

      • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

      • Travel of up to 1 to 2 weeks at a time to the Core Research Centre or field sites may be required. Remote locations may require camping overnight with limited amenities.

      • This role has a business requirement to work from the Edmonton or Calgary areas.
