      JOB SUMMARY

      The mandate of City Wide Programs, Aquatics & Specialized Services is to provide strategic vision and innovative leadership in managing customer centric sports, physical activity, aquatics and recreation venues, programs and services for all ages, including the management of facilities and/or land, and for the delivery of indoor and outdoor recreation programs and services. This Service provides city wide access to adapted, therapeutic and integrated recreation programs, giving children, youth and adults with special needs the opportunity to participate in community recreation.

      Under the guidance of a Program Coordinator, you are responsible for the daily operation of the wading pool program within the city’s parks, and following all policies & procedures and safety guidelines set by the branch. This includes supervision of staff, training, and assisting with staff evaluations, as well as supervision of participants in the wading pool/area. It also includes undertaking light maintenance, monitoring water quality levels, program planning/delivery of age appropriate activities and events, administrative duties and responding to public inquiries.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      High School Student – Minimum Grade 11

      Minimum of 4 months but less than 8 months of related experience is required, with City of Ottawa parks Wading Pool Program or equivalent

      CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

      Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
      AODA Accessibility/IASR Training
      Current Lifeguard, Lifesaving, Water Safety or Swim Instructor, and/or related aquatics certificates are assets

      KNOWLEDGE

      • Knowledge of the day to day operation of a wading pool site
      • Understanding the development and recreational needs of children
      • AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) Legislated training required
      • City of Ottawa Core Training
      • Applicable Ottawa Recreation, Cultural, and Facility Services, aquatic policies and procedures
      • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
      • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures

      COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      • Experience in planning, delivery and evaluating recreation programs for preschool children and youth with disabilities in a park environment
      • Proven ability to lead peers, train, supervise and evaluate staff
      • Conflict management, problem solving and the ability to multi task in an outdoor environment
      • Ability to execute park programs for children
      • Ability to provide safe supervision in a wading pool environment
      • Ability to operate any required tools/equipment
      • Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
      • Ability to work in a team setting or independently
      • Maintain a fun and safe environment
      • Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership and programming skills
      • Good organization skills
      • Sound judgment in difficult situations
      • Must be able to relate to children and be a good role model

      • Language Requirement:Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
      • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Note: Under the age of 18, requires a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters check in place of the Vulnerable Sector Check.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
