      This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The swim team coach oversees the activities, practices, and competitions of the swim team. Provides leadership, instruction and motivation of participants in a competitive swimming environment. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development and healthy living in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      1. Along with the Aquatics Director, assists in overseeing the swim team program, including registrations, practices, and competitions.
      2. Responsible for planning, preparing, and hosting YMCA swim meets.
      3. Provides lead instruction and serves as first point of contact for assistant swim team coaches.
      4. Submits check requests in advance of meets to ensure registration fees are paid on time.
      5. Maintains proper communication and rapport with parents/guardians at all times.
      6. Obtains parent volunteers for needed events and submits volunteer applications to ensure compliance with YMCA volunteer policies.
      7. Responsible for transporting and maintaining necessary swim team equipment to and from events.
      8. Helps to track and document swim team athlete’s progress and statistics.
      9. Tracks and maintains the quality of the swim team program and provides the opportunity to improve their swimming skills and to achieve success at each level of ability.
      10. Keeps the pool clear of equipment and putting equipment in proper storage place.
      11. Attends all staff meetings and training sessions and always maintains a professional attitude.
      12. Maintains communication with Aquatics Director to include all mandatory reporting.
      13. Ensure the YMCA swim team adheres to all YMCA approved local, state, and national swim team guidelines and policies.
      14. Participates in our Annual YMCA fundraising campaigns. Along with the Aquatics Director, assists in hosting at least one annual swim team fundraising event.
      15. Follows all YMCA of Greater San Antonio policies and procedures.
      16. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      1. Associate degree in related field is preferred. High School Diploma or GED required.
      2. Three to five years of swim coaching experience preferred.
      3. Must be 21 years of age and above.
      4. Must have leadership experience.
      5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
        the community.
      6. Strong problem-solving skills required in interactions with parents, coaches, volunteers and staff.
      7. Employee must have basic computer knowledge.
      8. Certifications required within the first 30 days of hire: YMCA approved basic life saving skills such as CPR, First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen.
      9. Completion of the YMCA approved coach’s safety training.
      10. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

      • Work is performed in an outdoor and indoor aquatic environment.
      • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
      • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
      • Visual acuity is necessary, to keep track of everyone in the pool.
      • Ability to respond properly to medical emergency is necessary.
      • Job requires high levels of alertness and concentration.
