      Teacher of the Deaf

      0.5 FTE

      Job Duties:

      • Provide and oversee specially designed instruction and related services for students with qualifying conditions of hearing loss or Deafness, recognizing the importance of ASL and Deaf culture in their communication and learning.
      • Assist in modifying the general education curriculum for Deaf students and those with hearing loss, using a range of instructional techniques and technologies to support their learning needs.
      • Develop, implement, and case manage (as applicable) Individual Education Plans (IEPs); lead or attend IEP meetings with staff and parents; attend GT meetings as needed.
      • Lead or assist evaluation teams to determine the need for Special Education services, ensuring fair and inclusive assessments.
      • Provide professional guidance on materials, assistive devices, and technologies to promote student success, considering the specific needs of Deaf students.
      • Supervise and collaborate with district ASL interpreters, supporting effective communication within the educational team.
      • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality in all matters pertaining to students, parents, staff, and program.
      • Work closely with the district’s special education director, principals, interpreters, and school staff to support the educational programs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
      • Provide other Special Education consultation/assistance as needed.

      Requirements:

      • Washington Teacher Certificate with endorsement in Special Education or the ability to obtain one immediately. Teacher of the Deaf coursework or certification preferred.
      • Demonstrate knowledge of "Best Practices" in special education, with an understanding of the specific needs of Deaf students.
      • Mastery of state and federal laws regarding students with disabilities, and an understanding of the rights of Deaf students.
      • Possess strong communication skills in English and ASL, both in person and in writing.
      • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
      • Exceptional ability to meet required compliance deadlines with caseload.
      • Interpreting certification(s) preferred, from or including NAD, RID, EIPA.
      • Knowledge of and ability to assist district staff in implementing Washington State Common Core educational standards, ensuring accessibility for Deaf students.

      Physical Requirements:

      The job's functions requires the following physical demands:

      • Occasional lifting (up to 30 pounds); carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant reaching, handling, speaking, writing, hearing, and fine finger dexterity; frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
      • Ability to sign with clarity, expression, and speed sufficient for the educational environment over the typical student day.

      Condition of Employment:

      • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check
      • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance
      • Completion of federal I-9 form
