How we use our technical advice in decision making
Provide some input into our practice areas about trends and patterns in specific sectors and issues that we need to be aware of
Review cases where the technical issues are contested
Areas of specialist knowledge regarding unusual or complex financial products, medical claims, property claims including surveyors reports, and travel insurance.
Where appropriate, review relevant complaint documentation and monitor regulatory changes.
Using their sector expertise and knowledge, highlight and provide insight into issues that may be relevant for the ombudsman to consider when assessing a complaint.
Prepare insight, as necessary, and document their views concerning their expertise in regard to particular complaints. This advice and information may be required both verbally and/or in writing.
Acknowledge that ombudsmen and the Service are not bound by their advice.
Acknowledge that their advice may be referenced in Service views and decisions, and shared with the parties to a complaint.
Acknowledge that their advice may be disclosed in compliance with legal obligations, during the course of litigation proceedings and through disclosure gateways under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Disclosure of Information by Prescribed Persons) Regulations 2001.
Where the Ombudsman Service requires, advise case handlers on appropriate training needs.

Contract: 18-month fixed term agreement
Working hours: flexible - to suit you and us. It assumed there will be circa 6 days of work per year, comprised of 1 preparation day and 5 days of giving advice.
Day rate: £550 per day, £275 per half day (3.5 hours) (inclusive of VAT if you need to charge it)
Location: as a self-employed independent Technical Advisor, it is expected that advice will be provided from a location convenient to you (e.g. from home). Attendance at the Financial Ombudsman Service’s offices (Exchange Tower, E14 9SR) may be required to provide advice.
At the Financial Ombudsman Service, we make decisions on a range of complex and difficult issues. Every year we resolve hundreds of thousands of disputes between consumers or small businesses and their financial service providers – and if we believe a customer hasn’t been treated fairly, we can step in to put things right.
We have recently undergone an internal transformation and now have sector-specific casework directorates like banking and consumer credit. As we receive a wide range of ever-changing technical complaints and demands, we are seeking a network of professionals who have the expertise and experience required to analyse and provide advice on the specific technical aspects of disputes that customers may bring to us, including those involving more complex circumstances.

As a self-employed member of our Technical Expert Advisory Group (‘the Group’), the purpose of your role will be to provide the Service with specialist knowledge and expert advice to supplement in-house expertise to ensure that we provide an effective service and the fair resolutions to our customer. You will have a personal impact by helping to resolve disputes in high profile areas of industry practice. Areas of expertise we are seeking include, but are not limited to, fintech, cryptocurrency, medical travel insurance, surveying in property claims, and pensions actuarial calculations.
The Group will not decide cases, which will remain the role of our independent Ombudsmen. The role of a Group member will be to advise on the technical areas relevant to a case.
