Job Title: Technical Writer for Accessibility Content

Overview:

We are seeking several skilled Technical Writers to join our team on a project for the National Park Service (NPS). The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating alternative and extended text descriptions for NPS maps to ensure compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). This role requires a keen attention to detail, a strong grasp of descriptive language, and a commitment to enhancing accessibility.

Responsibilities:

• Develop clear and concise alternative text (alt-text) for graphical content to aid users with visual impairments.
• Write extended descriptions for complex maps to provide a comprehensive understanding for all users.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts and accessibility specialists to ensure content accuracy and compliance with WCAG standards.
• Revise and edit existing descriptions based on feedback and testing results.
• Maintain documentation and project files, keeping detailed records of all created content.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field.
• Proven experience in technical writing or content creation focused on accessibility.
• Familiarity with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and experience writing accessible content.
• Ability to translate visual information into descriptive text that can be understood by individuals with various disabilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to meet tight project deadlines.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with content management systems and accessibility tools.
• Knowledge of digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) is ideal.
• Experience in environmental science, geography, or a related field is a plus.
