      JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

      We are searching for a Thermal Power Subsystem Lead Mechanical Engineer to join the Energy Science and Power System Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). This position will lead in the design, development, and testing of novel thermal power system prototypes to support ARL, Navy and DoD needs. Prior demonstrated experience working with the Navy and DoD is highly valued.

      You will:

      • Design and analyze mechanical, fluid-flow, and heat transfer components for thermal power plants and other energy conversion systems

      • Manage and lead component and subsystem test planning, test execution, and test documentation

      • Support assembly, maintenance, and delivery of hardware to various government sponsors

      Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related discipline; 5+ years related experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.

      Required skills/experience areas include:

      • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or similar engineering discipline

      • Experience working with the US Navy and DoD, including the design, fabrication, maintenance, and testing of thermal power systems

      • Past success supervising and mentoring lower-level staff in solving complex mechanical engineering problems

      • Experience with one or more of the following is highly desired: material selection, structural design, gears, bearings, pumping elements, heat exchangers, fluid delivery systems, thermal cycles and combustion

      • The ability to express yourself and ideas successfully to others in order to provide understanding in written and verbal forms

      • Proficiency with solid-modeling CAD software (Unigraphics/Seimens NX preferred)

      • Knowledge of standard drafting practices including geometric tolerances

      • Must be eligible to obtain a security clearance for access to classified information and be subject to a government background investigation

      Your working location will be fully-remote.

      The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

      $109,300.00 - $164,000.00
