      Kent County Department of Public Works is seeking a Transfer Station Operator. This individual will work primarily at the South Kent Landfill and may be required to fill in at the North Kent Transfer Station or Waste-to-Energy Facility on rare occasions.

      South Kent Landfill, Byron Center, MI. Primary responsibilities include operation and daily maintenance of a front-end loader and a roll off truck to manage and transfer refuse to the working face of the South Kent Landfill. The successful candidate will also be responsible for visually inspecting refuse brought to the landfill to verify prohibited materials are not disposed of in the landfill. Other duties include assisting waste haulers and the general public with unloading materials, directing traffic in and out of the facility, snow plowing, use of skid loader, grounds maintenance, assisting coworkers and keeping maintenance records. The position requires the ability to operate a roll-off truck both at the South Kent Landfill and on public roads.

      North Kent Transfer Station (NKT) in Rockford, MI combined with the Waste-to-Energy Facility (WTE) in Grand Rapids, MI. Primary responsibilities include the operation and daily maintenance of heavy equipment (primarily a front-end loader). The front-end loader is used to push solid waste into a waste storage pit at the WTE. At NKT the loader is primarily used to load solid waste into an in-floor hopper that feeds a hydraulic compactor. In addition, open top trailers/container loading, operation of a stationary refuse compactor, operation of a switch tractor to spot transfer trailers and the operation of a roll-off truck are required for this position. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting refuse brought to the Waste-To-Energy facility and the North Kent Transfer Station to verify acceptability for disposal. Other tasks and duties may include but not limited to assisting the general public with unloading materials, driving a roll-off truck and directing traffic in and out of the facility.

      Must be available to work a rotating shift which includes weekends and some holidays.
      • High school graduate/equivalent or GED required.
      • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with airbrake endorsement, or CDL Class A.
      • Work experience in the operation of construction equipment and small ground equipment.
      • Must have the ability to communicate with individuals from widely diverse backgrounds.
      Desire an individual with prior experience in the operation of refuse equipment and inspection of refuse in a solid waste or recycling operation.
